I can't believe an AMD lab took a picture of a PC with an Intel label on it

Now now, you can't claim to focus on diversity in the workplace if it only applies to your employees.
Need some Intel chips in there. Besides, it's not like they hate each other, they just compete for our money.

To be fair, that's a pretty old i3 that shipped with W7 - it may just be there holding up the shelf.

If the new cards come with a 2-wire power solution like in the picture, i might just pick up one just to clean up my current cable clutter

If they come with those 2 wires they're like 10-watt parts!!!!

Not that surprising, remember project quantum?

talking of which, once vega ships there'll be a perfect excuse to bring out a mk2 with ryzen

Only 0.2W going by the power supply!

Re: AMD RX Vega Computex event is confirmed as a soft-launch

As I've said before HBM2 was AMD's biggest mistake. It's been delayed 9 months already, and went from 2Gbps down to 1.6 now, and STILL isn't out. This is the reason why they're going low volume workstation cards first (because they can't get any HBM2) and then we'll all be waiting for Q3 (maybe...LOL) for the GAMER card based on Vega. AMD should have went GDDR5x and we'd have seen cards 6 months ago with Vega. Too bad they went the wrong way AGAIN, as now NV already has an answer (1080ti) and even has Volta waiting in the wings with either GDDR5x (lower end models pushing down vega's) or GDDR6 (Q4 already using hynix GDDR6). It's looking more like Vega might not even be facing a 1080ti by the time it ships. A card that is nine months late (and then some) is always going to face something else instead of what was intended. Unfortunately it looks like only the cpu side will help them get to profits this year.

Already talking down the price. What a shame. Insane unreachable prices are not insane or unreachable if your competition is selling the dickens out of them because people see VALUE in them (or they wouldn't sell). Great margins (60%) and great profit is what you get when you have the TOP performing anything (cpu, gpu, ssd, etc). AMD seems to keep missing how to get to that part that WINS everything. To make matters worse, the Intel lic deal was fake.

So is NV getting that deal or is Intel thinking somehow they can avoid all of the new patents from NV (maybe AMD) for future stuff? It's not like NV/AMD stopped making patents for gpus. I'm guessing they'll be trampling pascal/volta etc patents going forward if they don't sign something with NV (or AMD at some point). It's pretty tough to come up with a design that doesn't cross their stuff and still perform in gaming etc. These two pretty much wrote the book (or bought ip from others to own the book over the years...LOL).

Either way, chalk up another mistake for AMD management going HBM2.

Hynix has GDDR6 coming too, but samsung already going. With a 9 month "teething" problem, I'm shocked AMD couldn't come up with a way to go GDDR5x or GDDR6 and call it a day. At least cost would come down some over the long haul and volume wouldn't be a problem on the top end stuff (see NV record revenues etc).

Re: AMD RX Vega Computex event is confirmed as a soft-launch

One more point, while I don't think they'll ship a card for Q4 with GDDR6 (volta), they will be mass producing them for Q1. So if vega is really any good (and probably with shortages due to HBM2, remember delayed 3 quarters already) they can always launch the Volta in Q4 just to stop sales and cause many to wait for more volume of volta, assuming it has to be faster than pascal (I'd hope...LOL). You'd only need a few launched before xmas to cause issues. A 256bit version would almost have the same bandwidth as 1080ti and be less complicated to make (likely cheaper too). Great way to kick off volta and kill AMD sales. AMD needed to be selling Volta 3-6 months ago for real margins.

It's comic the other day AMD said they'd be selling vega "for profit" (why did they need to say that?). How much is the question. Best hope now if for higher core zen chips to make far better margins (HEDT etc stuff). Looks like vega is pricing itself to death already for being 9 months late (or more).

But.... you need to be different and this decision was made ages ago. I agree it's late and all that, but again you can't change this overnight. Tweaks made to RX4xx line have improved them a bit, and if needs be they could always make some RX6xx parts with faster ram. Competition is good - but sometimes you get burned. look at Mclaren in F1 for example and until this season Ferrari. Should be great but seem to be just on the wroing side of a decision
