Re: Vulkan and OpenCL will merge into a single API

The only platform that uses Vulkan in any meaningful way is Android so any spread of Vulkan only helps build Android as a replacement for Windows.

Not sure those cheer-leading Vulkan & use Windows really understand the long term implications.

Linux desktop will never ever happen, it's a fools dream. Android PC's could very well push out Windows but isn't that out of the frying pan and into the fire... Google is certainly not going to allow beloved Steam grow in it's back garden.

Apple knows whats up and kicked Vulkan to the curb going with their own Metal API.

If only opencl supported as many things as cuda does when it comes to my 3D rendering....

LOL...You seem to forget Nvidia has it's own guy as CEO at Khronos, so it's not like they are out of the loop for whatever they are doing with vulkan etc. NV's guy WROTE OpenGL ES. Don't be too surprised when NV's hardware blows by AMD in all things vulkan as soon as it's actually important (meaning in more games than dx11). Right not optimizing for Vulkan (or DX12) instead of DX11 is just silly. We will see more companies go Vulkan only here soon (once current projects are done where they were too far along to switch), and then NV will be ready with a driver that wins. You cater to the largest audience dollars or lose it. AMD always seems to be backwards. IE, shooting for 4K (vega and even fury...LOL) and bottom feeders (480 and below, now 500's too aimed there). They should have been shooting for 1080p with a hint of 1440p, and low end should always be the last thing you do here when all the money is at the top. AMD's own slide recently shows 66% (IIRC) of the money comes from the >$200 cards. Well, that is where you should concentrate then.

Note, this doesn't mean I'm against standards, just glad NV spends money on driver dev where people are playing for the most part (dx11 and down). Current Vulkan games can be counted on my hands (1 hand? That I want to play anyway...ROFL), and not much else to say about DX12 yet either and most of those games work fine in DX11 with little or nothing gained visually and NV's DX11 drivers are good enough that they are close already to AMD's dx12 driver...OUCH. Pretty much the same story as when dx10 came out as far as what you get from it. DX10 version was just a perf hit, so nobody ever used it much for some time (well, not much at all really). Volta cards will probably see the Vulkan/dx12 stuff reverse, as we should start seeing more vulkan games by xmas or Q1 next year (which would then cause NV to spend there). Next year (I hope) will be the year of Vulkan taking over as devs jump ship from DX12.

It's comic to think a company making a cool 1.5B or so in PROFIT this year would be behind in drivers (vs. a company still losing money, AMD) without it being intentional (due to no real reason to spend there yet). If vulkan sold tons of games currently (and in turn gpus), you'd see NV winning. It is also why they didn't really take dx12 support seriously in the hardware even, until recently. Again, design for what people play or use, otherwise you've failed...But, but, but, we can win if you run X game at 4K, and, and, and...Whatever. You're just benchmarking our card wrong...ROFL. Or more recently with ryzen, "you're benchmarking our CPU wrong, you shouldn't benchmark it at 1080p where 95% of the market plays. Why would you do that?" Whatever you're selling me had better win TODAY, not in what I hope comes out next year, that may NEVER come to fruition. Unfortunately AMD goes 85% futureproof and 15% win today. I prefer the reverse, but still waiting to see vega They lost me on Zen gaming, but can still win me on the apu coming for HTPC's possibly. I'll wait for Zen+ or rev2 to fix gaming side for my main box.

a single 'best of both worlds' API
but such decisions always carry the risk of jack of all trades and master of none!
