I'm sure it's nice but I'll wait for "USB 3.1b Type C-II Gen 3 with Superspeed++ 80Gb"
It won't become widely accepted until it is ubiquitous on even low end mobos and oem-boards for the likes of Acer/Dell/Lenovo/HP. Right now the only way for most of us to get on the Thunderbolt bandwagon is to buy a stupid-tier motherboard at 2x the price of a "normal" consumer board, which is no way to gain traction.
Correct me if i am wrongb but isn't thunderbolt Intel proprietary? If they want full mainstream adoption they should share the standard as royalty free or nda share it with AMD. Because if they integrate as well then thats nearly 100% of cpu manufacturers employing it. And if they share with armb then all low power mobile devices will utilise it too?

My question is, why free now? Will this just kill USB efforts, and end up with a royalty version as soon as usb is dead? I think this would only be good if they say "royalty free for 20yrs for all future versions until then" or something. Otherwise, it seems to me v4 will be tied to a fee again once they rule everything because it's shipping on 90% of the pc's yearly; assuming they get it on chip soon which looks like 2018 here and reading about it elsewhere that is. Seems they're only doing this to take over via on chip support, then we're screwed. Call me crazy...Trust nobody (Intel made that list a long time ago).
One more point, this last rev of usb took 5yrs (2008-2013). So theoretically we should get 4.0 (3.2? whatever) sometime in 2018. So maybe we should wait and see here since that might be only a year away anyway...LOL. Hopefully out about the same time Intel gets this in a chip to sell. I'd rather have standards that royalties unless something is just SUPER awesome or something (orders of magnitude better than others, ok, I might buy it if it was everywhere).
