Re: Pirate Bay mines cryptocurrency using visitor CPUs

Given the restrictions they say will be implemented, then using this as an alternative to ads seems, to me, to be fair enough provided they have explicit user pemission. Otherwise, IMHO, it's at best offensive.

EDIT - BTW, I don't use TPB. I don't think I've ever even looked there but if I have it was a very long time ago. But if I did, I'd view it as a fair exchange for killing ads, provided I was asked first.

Anything that gets rid of the pop under ads that happen on the whole page is good in my book. Will make downloading Linux ISO's that much better . Normally i just use tor as ads/JS don't work 99% of the time.

Why on earth would you use TPB for Linux ISOs?

Edit: I have images/smilies disabled so missed the clue that it's just blatant piracy you were hinting at. Hope you aren't doing that at work..

I don't really have an issue with that considering what the 'majority' use TPB for. People need their fixes...

So instead of ads, borrowing your CPU for abit and isn't invading on your data is fine for me?

Hahaha, yeah, that's not going to happen. They already use every scummy method possible to trigger popups and have malicious fake links everywhere to try and trick users. You think they're going to ask permission for anything from anyone at this point?

Re: Pirate Bay mines cryptocurrency using visitor CPUs

Honestly, it'd probably be less obnoxious and resource consuming than a lot of ads out there. And it's not like you're going to spend a lot of time on the website, it's pretty much search for what you need and leave. Whatever hashes they get out of visitors, fair enough.

Looks like TPB aren't going to be the only people using Javascript mining, i can see many more people jumping on this bandwagon.

No, I don't. Which is why the "provided" was in bold, and I added the "otherwise" bit.

My comment was what I find a fair exchange, not an opinion on what they'll actually do, that being part of why I don't go there.

I agree with the point though. If a website I used gave a choice between showing me targeted & IMO obnoxious ads or using some of my dead cpu cycles while I'm viewing the page I'd be more than happy with the latter as long as there is no identifiable information involved.

TBP is just shady as hell anyway, so just a different kind of shady...

It's all very well except for when you visit on a laptop/tablet/phone and it drains the battery.
