    Linux Gaming

Well, Linux certainly isn't most peoples' thought for a games-based PC. Especially one being taken to a big tournament LAN party. However, by design or trickery, none of the tournament games at the event were out-of-bounds to my Linux machine, and rousing games of Call of Duty, Quake 2 and Unreal Tournament 2004 were shared by the HEXUS.net collective and any other gamers who felt like joining in.

    Very nice article.

Having pretty much convinced me to give Linux a try can you reccomend a distribution for me as I have no idea what each ones merits are. I (also) run an AMD 64 3500+ sytem with 1Gb ram and a 6800 GT which I use to play CS:S and WoW. I'm perfectly willing to dowbload Cedega if it's necessary.

thanks for your kind comments, guys.

sounds like you have some fairly nice kit out there! for picking a distribution, if you're a first-time user, I think Mandrake, Fedora, Ubuntu or Suse would make a good bet. Ubuntu is the hardest to install (has a text-mode installation like Windows XP, rather than a linux-style friendly graphical installer), but it's probably the moest adaptable once it's installed. You can either install a 32 bit version, or 64 bit - up to you really. You may find it slightly easier to use a 32 bit or mixed 32-64 (i.e. Suse), since the only closed-source 64 bit game on the market is UT2004, and it can take a little extra work to run 32 bit games in 64 bit mode.

Have to congratulate you on that article!

As for new comers to linux, I would seriously recommend Gentoo... it may be really really daunting (what with no installer what-so-ever) it actually isnt that bad to install - There is a plethora of documentation on how to get it running, and a complete "noobs guide" step by step of how to get the thing running. If you do get stuck, the comminity is huge, and answer questions really quickly

However, the best thing about Gentoo is once you have it booted and running.
I came to linux in the Red Hat 7 days, and I have to say i was really put off by how hard it was to install stuff - its dependency hell! Fedora (the new name for Red Hat) isnt much better really.

Gentoo on the other hand, you just type "emerge <<program name here>>" and it does it all for you... so "emerge wine" would get you set up super fast with Wine.

While i take the point there is a lot of bleeding edge stuff that may cause compatibility problems, there are tonnes of guides of how to get the latest games running in gentoo - I just had a look on the forums, and the "Game players" forum, where all the guides are, currently has 53,955 posts!

Anyway, plug over , and once again, great article!

Hey guys. Someone posted a link to the article over at the Ubuntu forums.

Just wanted to cast my vote for Ubuntu Linux for those interested in trying it out. Although I run AMD64 I think I would recommend installing i386 (32bit) for newcomers. The AMD64 port for Ubuntu/Debian still has a few wrinkles they need to iron out (Flash, codecs, etc.).

I've only been into Linux since August (my main os since December), but if someone like me can do it, then anyone can.

Just wanted to add that I'm a dyed-in-the-wool pc gamer so for me to leave XP as my main os is significant. I was Linux only, but reinstalled XP when I couldn't get Chronicles of Riddick to run in Cedega.

I found it funny that while reading a "Linux is great!" article, I get a popup that "Linux sux!" from Microsoft:

    Nice article.

I went linux-only when icculus ported Serious Sam - The First Encounter to linux about four or so years ago, and have never looked back. All the games I play, (the Sams, Doom, the Quakes, the UT's, Doom3) all run natively under linux, so maybe I'm lucky in that respect.

As for linux being harder to set up than XP, well I agree, but then once you're up and running and have everything configured exactly the way you want it, you don't need to worry about constant Windows updates, service packs, viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, malware etc. etc. etc.

I got sick of repairing friends hosed XP installs long ago, these days I give them a choice - they can pay me a decent hourly rate to sort their boxes out, or I can save their data, whack Mandrake or Knoppix on their box, show them the few differences they need to be aware of, and never have them bother me again with computer problems. Obviously if you need a certain Win-only app for work or something then this isn't an option, but for Joe Clueless who just wants do d/l porn, movies, and music, send the odd email, or knock up a letter or something, the linux desktop has been ready for years.

If you've never used linux and want to give it a spin, bung a Knoppix live-cd in there and have a play. If you want to learn about linux in some more depth and have a spare few gigs on your hd, a gentoo install serves as a very educational introduction, and isn't remotely as painful as some would have you believe.

    GL+HF!

    I disagree

Sorry to disagree here, but in my experience linux sucks for gaming. Yea you can do it, just but its slow, painful and lags behind the latest games(farcry/hl2??).

XP for all its critics is still better. So its made by M$, so what??, I just want to play games not make a political statement about globalisation, after all Im at home in my room!!!! If you are someone who actually enjoys faffing about trying make stuff run (remember DOS 5.1 extended memory anyone???) then Linux is the way to go. For me time is important (having a job and that) and the investment of my time in understanding and configuring the Linux platform is not an attractive proposition!

Sorry dont buy it, I have had XP installed for nearly a year now and I can count the crashes on one hand and they were probably overclocking issues. If your mates cant run XP without crashing it I dont think they are gonna be better off with Linux!!

At the risk of starting a war here, XP is still overall a better solution than Linux!!! (for me). It would be nice to see from Hexus the stats on page views, to see how many of the ppl championing Linux are actually writing their post from XP!!

    XP rocks

ATI X800 XT PE | Blackgold TV Card
    Raptor 74Gb OS/Games | 200Gb Storage
