Learning to Fly

I know a few people on here have had some lessons, and I have myself a few years ago, before giving up due to the expense.

I've finally decided it's time to forfil my dream, so I'm off today for a month in Florida, where I shall hopefully get my licence for half the price, as well as getting a fantastic holiday. If anyone is interested in how things go, I'll try to post some updates!

A friend of mine spent the last 2 years learning to fly and getting all his licenses etc - now he gave up his IT job to go be a private pilot earning double the cashola

Alot less than it does over here. A friend learns a Lydd.

tbh I'd love to do it, but the annoying thing is is after you've got a licence for a single engined light aircraft you need for experience and tests to carry passengers, then charge the passengers, then fly in foul weather or dark, then dual engine, then helicopter!........it all gets rather expensive! - certainly most of those need the extra flying time, the dark one im not sure.

Also one normally shares an aircraft with some friends - this is still expensive.

high wycombe isn't that far fron Cranfield - more flying schools than you can shake a stick at there

Just out of interest is the American pilots licence valid over here without a retest etc?. You never know with regulations and i'd be interested to know.

Yeah Cranfield rocks for light aircraft training, that and its my original village

The American PPL is valid over here however you need to do a short test on the laws.... they are different over here.

Saving up to take a JAR PPL in the states (Long Beach) through http://www.ukft.com/. Would cost £5500 for the same training in the UK but it costs just under £3000 and the license is vaild in the UK.

Its also 6 weeks in the states (Cali) but accomodation is going to be a bit of dosh.

Extra costs could incur:

# Medical Examiner's Fee (Approx £150)
# CAA Examiner's Skills Test Fee (£150)
# CAA Radio Examiner's Fee (£70)
# CAA Licence Issue Fee (£146)
# Written Examination re-sits (£23.50 each)

As you say, accomodation could be a bit.

NPPL costs less, but there are alot more restrictions than a JAR PPL.

Well, I'm here!
Not had my first lesson yet, but going through some of the ground stuff.
I'm doing the FAA licence, which is valid in the UK with no extra tests/training. It's better than the JAA licence since it doesn't need renewal, and includes night and turbine ratings. It's also a hell of a lot cheaper, since the FAA doesn't charge 150UKP just to issue a bit of paper.

The big thing to remember when you get back to the UK is that it gets cloudy and rainy here and requires different levels of awareness in the air that you probably won't be used to in sunny US of A.
