Chassis to take 8 drives (poss 9!)

I need a chassis which is well cooled and can house the following:

9 SATA Hard Drives
2 Optical drives

Coolermaster Stacker CM but you'll need either 3.5 to 5.25 adapter rails for the disks or to purchase more 3.5 inch disk trays (it comes with one for 4 drives)

David that sounds like its going to need a beast of a PSU - worth allowing for dual supplies ?

If I can I will - I was going to use either an AKASA 650W or a PC Power and Cooling one

Its going to run an Intel Desktop board, a P4 3.6 and 2GB RAM.

It will be running Windows XP.

I didn't want it in a Server chassis thats the thing.

The AKASA does it - only just looked But worried about if it could cool that much.

Initially the unit will only have 6 drives in it (5 for RAID and 1 Boot drive).

I have a brand new Coolermaster CM110 in my cellar spare which I could use.

The CM Stacker is capable of taking 2 PSUs (one at top and one at bottom) there is lots of cooling in it - I have fitted the crossflow fan to cool the motherboard backplane, 12cm fan for front drive bays (in), 12cm fan at back (out), 2 x 8cm at top rear (out) and an 8cm at top middle blowing upwards (out)

My old AOPEN full height would take it.

4 3 1/2 mounts above the PSU
3 3 1/2 mounts at the front
5 5 1/4 mounts

Leaves you with a free 5 1/4 bay.

Can I find a retailer that sells plain, functional cases like the old AOPEN ones? Can I b......

As for the PSU, I've got a 300W running that amount of drives. SCSI spin up on command tho. They'll run fine, just would never get em spinning up all at once.

I've got 8 Drives on my casetek 1018 6 internal and 2 external via the A8N-SLI deluxe external SATA connections with 2 drives hidden on the shelf

Thats my next purchase - a nice case that can house numerous HDD's and has good cooling

The Supermicro also has redundant PSUs.

Yes I know they are expensive... but they will cool it.

The noise doesn't matter so much either - its designed to be a media DATA storage unit

Again, something the older AOPEN cases where great for. All the mounts where well attached to the case exterior and got the heat conducted away without the need for a veritable cornucopia of fans. Solid, well designed boxs without a blue LED in sight.

Friend of mine had a very similar setup in a full height tower but with 10K discs all round, I built up a rather nice mounting modification to get the heat out of those. Better than any premade solution I've seen yet aswell

Either stacker, which will fit your cooling needs amply. Maybe a V2000? How many drives can they take? Cant recall if its four or ten hdds, although it looks like they might get a bti toasty. What about a yeong yang cube?

The 110 was going to be my desktop system - just not had time to build it.

The V2000 appears to be a little sketchy - bare in mind it has the drives sitting on top of each other

That's the Cookie. I've got one around somewhere housing my twin celeron 366@550 system on a BP6.

Fantastic build, but 12Kg BEFORE the other hardware got a little much for a PC I was carting around all the time.

I've now got some generic aluminium thing, OK it weighs less, but it's not taken to life on the road too well. The Aopen's got scratches and dinks, from about 3 years of total abuse and the ali case is actually bent.

Which brings me on to.....

Good luck. It appears (at the moment) that people just chuck cases like this rather than sell them on a well known auction site.

I've been after a MIDI version to house my everyday comp and I'm not having a lot of luck. What I really want is something that came out from aopen just after called the 'Supertower'

MIDI sized, but takes 8 x 3 1/4" and 4x 5 1/2" drives.

I tried one out as a server in an office I set up. Now I'm really tempted to phone em and 'upgrade' them to a nice buckled ali case



Moroal of the story? They don't make em like they used to.
