Dieing CPU?

Hi guys.

I think my CPU may be dieing...... recently I've been getting interference on my freeview box from using CPU intensive programs, but over the week+ my processor temperature has raised about 18o C, and today my computer has had serious lagging issues.

I'm careful when it comes to my computer, so hardware wise things are kept cool, CPU isn't overclocked.. no dust nuggets in the heatsink. Software wise, computer is clean, no viruses, no spyware, no constantly running CPU intensive programs (I even stopped using F@H).

Is this a sign of a dieing CPU?

Edit: Btw, even when Windows XP starts (the loading boot-up screen), takes AGES to load now, where as it would be quite short before.

I seriously doubt it's time for a format as I only did one about a month ago.

have you checked to see if the heatsink has come loose, and if it is making contact properly with the cpu? worth a go and would be the first place i would look

Few things you might check:

When the heat sink fell of my video card, the pc would lock up the screen would freeze, if I left it 5 mins it would start working again for about 2 mins, then look up again.

Can you run the PC with the case off? If your process temps are up what the ambient case temp like? has a fan died, is anything covering any of the fans

The last HD that failed was manifested by random lock ups - none of the loud clicking noises on previous occasions

Did you removed the Heatsink from the CPU, to check the contact, if so did you slap it back on or did you removed any thermal pad/paste and re-apply? - I've normally just slap it back on, other poster suggest cleaning and re-applying.

Hi,
My PC doesn't lock up, just lags.

I can run the PC with the case off - all the fans are fine, and I can't get a case temperature (no sensors).

About two months ago I removed the heatsink from the CPU, removed the thermal pad and applied silver paste - was running at about 39oC iirc. (Took it off in the first place to try get it a bit cooler, CPU core looked fine, didn't look cracked or anything).

Also added a new fan/heatsink for my GPU about two months ago too - added the same silver paste to that (had no video card problems though).

just another quick suggestion...take out any usb and pci devices and unplug any un-needed ide devices and see if it still does it. is your cpu showing 0% usage in the task manager?

'Three finger' it and check what is running in task manager. Also try to see if you can do a health check on your HDD, some manufacturers have programs to diagnose and predict failure. That might be to blame.

Clunk: USB thing doesn't seem to help, in task manager the 0% usage usually jumps between 0-15 when idling (but I'm guessing this is because AV, Firewall, and other desktop apps are running).

Just out of interest, what make/model of CPU is it ?
