The reason is that they probably don't have any player software sorted out yet. In order to make sure no one cracks the copy protection by reverse engineering the player software it will have to be very carefully written and that will take time. The firmware on standalone Blue Ray players does not have to be so sophisticated because much fewer people have access to debugging tools for the hardware, and it is easier for the firmware to detect and prevent debug attempts.

Sony itself provides InterVideo WinDVD BD with the Vaio mentioned in the news piece - and, if you go here , you'll see that this software is supposed to have passed all the necessary tests.

So Sony has decided to include the software with its Vaio computer and not with the burner.

thing is, most places selling thses drives (just checked froogle) are bundling the complete Cyberlink suite with it. PowerDVD and PowerProducer have already recieved BD certification according to the Cyberlink website.

What remains, then, is the issue with putting inside your PC a graphics card that's HDCP-compliant.

    yeah, thats true.

so much to take into account with HD video :/

wasn't the sale of PC DVD-Rom drives a large driver to the adopotion of DVD-Video in the early days?

All this next gen video stuff is making my head hurt. Different formats, cables, compatible displays, compatible video cards, compatible software, all the DRM crap, different HDMI port versions, OMG!!! The world has finally gone crazy, the average consumer is going to have no chance in dealing with this stuff. Can you imagine the quality of advice form stores like Dixons / Comet, the average Joe Public doesn't stand a chance.

i find it amusing that two thirds of people who've gone to these sorts of places and bought a high-definition because the guys told them it makes ur picture look nicer, dont actually realise that its still a standard pal signal playing through it :S
