Plasma makers attempt HD fightback with pan-European campaign

Sales of high-def LCD TV sets are still powering ahead of those of more expensive plasma models.

At least, we've seen no figures to suggest things have change and can think of no other reason why three of the world's top plasma TV makers are announcing that they've got together to promote the claimed benefits of plasma over LCD - with a pan-European advertising campaign and a dedicated web site: http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.eu.

    More in this HEXUS.lifestyle.headline.

Oh, and do please share your thoughts on the relative benefits (and pricing) of plasma and LCD.

Next xmas they'll release laser tellies which should be cheaper, lighter and better quality than either.. Plasma/LCD is so yesterdays news..

LCD/Plasma circa 20% of eyes visible colour range, laser circa 90%; laser 25% of the power requirement, longer lifetime, cheaper to manufacture, neglible response times. Do some reading young man and no need to be quite so dismissive - i'm merely pointing out that LCD/Plasma aren't long term solutions with SED and laser technologies burgeoning on release to the mainstream market.

There's a lot of FUD on both sides but in _principle_ laser technologies ought to have many advantages of LCD and Plasma (both of which are far from perfect) - we'll know next year when mitsu/samsung start pushing out actual sets which we can compare. There's lots on the (near) horizon that could really push things forwards - SED, laser, nanotube, HDR displays etc. - and hopefully address some of the shortcomings of current displays. As for laser - even ignoring the bias the basic physics allow for a far greater range of colour than is achievable with LCD/Plasma; a laser can cover most of the spectrum of the eye! The problem with laser has always been producing green/blue light from semiconductive lasers with enough power - a few companies claim to have solved this and are actively working with people like Mitsu/Samsung to commercialise it. Personally I hope we do get something revolutionary as it can only serve to make the market even more cutthroat than it is now. LCDs are getting seriously cheap now..

And, with my response, I've achieved exactly what I wanted - with the added bonus of you calling me "young man".

    Win-win.

Oh, and for those who don't like typing, here's a Google search link.

'Shift To Large TVs Favors LCD Over Plasma' - InformationWeek

Thought this article - Shift To Large TVs Favors LCD Over Plasma - in InformationWeek, might be of interest to those who are reading this thread.

This line, in particular, caught my eye,

In a potential sign of slowing plasma TV demand, Japan's top three plasma TV makers -- Matsush1ta, Hitachi and Pioneer Corp. -- last month cut their unit sales forecasts by 8 to 20 percent for the year to March.
NB: I had to spell Matsush1ta that way, cos our bad-language filter won't let the four characters, sh1t, appear - it stars them out.

Now now Bob - bypassing the filter is against forum rules

Makes sense - there's a perception of LCD as being more advanced and the early days of short-lived plasmas tainted them thereafter..

why not change the swear filter to "sh1t " and " sh1t" (with spaces before & after) so you can use words like "matsu****a" without problems?

I originally thought OLED would be out by now in larger sizes, but lifetime is still not good apparently (?).
OLED displays hold the promise to play a significant role in the flat-TV market, offering an excellent image quality (high contrast, large viewing angle, fast response time) combined with an ultra-thin form factor and low power consumption. With polymer-based OLED displays, inkjet printing can be used to pattern the required OLED layers on a substrate from solution, providing a low-cost, scalable technique for making large-screen displays.
