Got an AMD CPU, thinking of a 8800?

Good article showing CPU scaling across a number of games. Pretty much as I thought and makes it look as though I will stay with AMD X2 for the time being as shader intensive games don't really benefit from faster cpus..
I'll prolly go 8800 post xmas when it's cheaper..

Yeah but add the cost of upgrading to a conroe and it's a divorce causing moment. I'm glad that my current gear holds up so well with the new cards - it's very rare I see 100% cpu use in-game atm (1600x1200) so i know i'm GPU bound in most games..

Agreed, at 1600x1200 and above with high Q AA/AF, an 8800GTX and 4200 are probably a good match. And it looks like we'll need quad core to see any advantages in games (ie physics etc) when that eventually happens next year. Hold off on the CPU for that! And will give you time to plan the re-mortgaging of the house.

I'm at the equivilent of a 4600 anyway (2.4ghz) and could push it further if necessary but all I really do with the PC is game so.. If anything games are likely to get more shader intensive, and coupled with them finally making use of the second core, CPU limiting isn't realistic for me for some time (at a guess). I'll wait until I see the need for the system upgrade - till then a huuuge graphics card will do

Good find. Its certainly for informative for the real world users,
than just testing with a x6800 all the time, but it doesnt show anything we didnt know before hand, just good to see the figures.
