Inspiron Memory Upgrade

Hi everyone,

I've just got myself a Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook and I love it to bits. I've currently got just 256MB ram though, which I'm looking to upgrade as soon as possible. (Dell are truly extortionate on their memory upgrades!)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone with the same laptop could advise me on what I should be getting. I've heard about some compatibility problems with this particular notebook, so will the cheap ass unbranded stuff work for me? I've heard that only crucial ram will work on my system, but it tends to cost a bit more.

You could always order from http://www.crucial.com/uk and use the memory advisor tool then you shouldn't have any compatibility problems.

Thanks Lou. I was hoping to get some ram off ebay, cos it's a fair bit cheaper. I don't get it though - surely ram is ram? And if it fits and it's the right type, why shouldn't it work, exactly?

What happens if it doesn't work? Can I claim a refund?

As far as I know, the inspiron 6000 just uses DDR2 pc-533 Sodimms, you shouldnt face any compatibility problems with that.

I'd say with RAM, its worth going for CRUCIAL stuff...the stuff is certified for use with that thing you buy it for. Do you remember the old issues with having a low number of chips where the mobo couldn't cope with the high density ram? And some boards can't cope with too good CAS settings and and and...

Now I'm not saying you CAN'T save a few quid, but the thing with RAM is its often possible to be a head scratcher - the machine works, a bit, but is flakey. Very hard to diagnose BUT cheap RAM doesn't help.

Go Crucial (or whoever); ebay RAM you just don't know what you're getting. And to be honest, I have always found their RAM reasonably priced.
