Is it worth upgrading my Desire HD?

    Hi all,

I'm due for an upgrade next week on my phone contract, I currently have a HTC Desire HD which I have to say I still love, as much as an entertainment device when I'm at home as a mobile. The only thing that I really would change about it is the battery life which is seriously shocking. I'm pretty sure I'd be able to wangle the One X or Galaxy S3 when the time comes which I know are both very powerful phones. I just wonder is there really any point in a quad core phone? My HD runs all the apps I have nearly flawlessly plus I just heard its getting the ICS update some time in the next couple of months which was the only other reason I could think to switch phones. The One X's lack of removable battery and storage makes me hesitant to choose it.

I currently pay £30 a month (which effectively comes in at £22 after redemption). Ideally I'd like to pay a lot less. I'm just wondering what you guys think and what my options are, I'm torn between going for a dirt cheap SIMO deal of less than a tenner a month and staying at the price I'm at but getting a new phone possibly to flog on eBay because I could do with the cash injection, I wonder if I could wangle a retention deal that would be good enough to actually make the latter more profitable than just going for a cheap SIMO. Problem with the latter option is that they will try and tie me in for at least 18 months to get a top new phone, if not 24, by which time my HD will probably be REALLY showing its age, or possibly have broken/got lost etc.

Obviously the third option is get a new phone now and sell the HD, which I don't think I would get much for.

    Opinions?

Haha thanks so much for such an *incite*ful reply.

I think I'm going to go for a dirt cheap SIM only deal (you can get them practically free via redemption) and see what the new handsets are like in another 12 months

Re: Is it worth upgrading my Desire HD?

Nooo, you need to upgrade. I had the HTC Desire, and found the screen became too small (not physically of course). I just found that over time I was spending more time pinch zooming webpages and wishing I had more screen realestate.

My recommendation for you would be to go with the Samsung Galaxy Note. 5.3" screen of awesome goodness (that's what it should say in the manual).

My contract is £36 per month, though I guess you can get it cheaper now. Stunning phone, you won't regret.

Re: Is it worth upgrading my Desire HD?

I was up for upgrade recently too, but in the end i decided not to bother (from a Galaxy S).
I don't get the official ICS treatment which is grand for you, but still, after looking at all the upgrade paths, possible switching of networks to make use of new customer deals and chatting around, in the end i came to the conclusion that the only phones worth upgrading for would be the Galaxy SIII or the Nexus (slightly older, but branding/bloatware free and gets priority updates from Google). Like you, the encased battery on the One X irked a bit and it's also quite a small battery - if you think your battery life is bad now, well.
However, i just decided to save the cash and cancel. Though, i had another contract with 3 that was due for upgrade a while ago and when i went to cancel that, i managed to talk them into bringing my £15 a month contract down to £2.50. So now i've just put that in my Galaxy S.

If i were you, i'd see what i could wring out of them, and keep it in your Desire. Get as short a contract as you can (maybe even a rolling monthly one, as i got from 3) and in a while maybe see what's new on offer.

You're right about the DHD battery being shocking, have you rooted yours?

large screen device eat battery quickly. if you are looking for a large screen upgrade, their battery performance will be similar unless you can be bothered with rooting your device and shuffling custom firmware in and out of your device. I think it is better to wait for another few month until the successor of one X comes out. I heard htc is planning something big to release this fall.
