    Bitorrent and downloading newbie question..

    Hi
Whilst being 'relatively' technology savy, I have not delved into the world of downloading and bittorrents yet. Can someone recommend any good sites/threads/forums for learning a little more about this? I have downloaded Utorrent, but where to find reliable comprehensive content to download?? Do I need to pay to join a seach site, do I need to be vetted to access a search site?? What sort of formats are commonly used for video and music?

    Thanks in advance

Just a heads up - discussion on piracy is not allowed on Hexus, keep it legal.

e : also, you should never pay for anything bittorrent related.

That would depend on what you're after. Obviously anything illegal would be frowned upon very seriously and likely earn you a visit from the ban hammer.

Like it was said above, bittorrent is free. There is no need to pay for software to use it or for a site to download from, those are just common scams.

Might I recomend the utorrent client, it's simple, small and doesn't hog resources.

Also a guide about bittorrent from what.cd: http://pastebin.com/f60f15a84
(sorry it's not formatted so well... :/)

Well I wouldnt want to do anything naughty!
I'm really just try to see how things work, I was looking at media players and the popcorn hour A110 caught my eye. It has some functionality for bitorrent, but I was wondering what media you can get and play through it and how? Then did a search through google on my pc and then got lost as it all looks a bit dodgy....getting redirected all the time, no apparent files to download etc.

There are quite a few dodgy sites out there... to be honest I never use public trackers so I can't tell you which are safe.

A freind of mine is a frequent user of torrent sites - however when I looked into it I decided most of what I saw available was copyrighted stuff and at that rate illegal, at the least it was dubious. At that point I deleted Utorrent and decided that I could live without it!!

Popular video formats are - .avi .mkv (usual ones i end up with)

Audio are generally - .mp3 sometimes some .wav

Enjoy using torrents, they are fantastic.

I dont use them anymore - tired of having to seed on private trackers, so i use private SSL hosts

    But thats naughty

Just use your best judgement when dealing with public trackers and torrent searchers. Google for content you're not sure about.
