Im hoping to add three dual quad xeon servers to the list in the next few weeks, will the SMP client work ok with 8 cores?

The SMP client runs four threads, so on an 8 way box, you need to run two instances of the client to get the most out of the server.

Install the SMP client as per usual, and make sure that you've done the install bit so that it registers the SMPD.exe

With that done, make a copy of the \program files (x86)\folding at home smp client v1.01 or whatever it is
Run fah -config in the default install, and put your settings in as per usual (nb, it's worth doing the advanced settings and allowing units >5mb and scientific cores as the new Xeons seem to love them and you get points++ for completing them).
In the copy of the default install directory, run fah -config again configure away as normal, except change the last option on there (machine ID) to something other than 1 (otherwise it'll either fail, or both sets will work on the same data).
With that done, you should be able to churn through 2 WU's at the same time.

If you're doing a large deployment, I can give you a hand building a GPO/SMS package to push the client across an OU (which is how I do it )

NB, if you're stresstesting, leave desired CPU usage at 100%. If however it's a production server that does other things, leave it at 95%. I find this a good balance between maintaining server response time and maximising its folding ability.

Ouch, 15 minutes per frame, that's bad. I'm getting just over 8 minutes per frame, 3000 points per day on my main rig and about 800 on my laptop.

Come back when you have a real rig, Platinum.

Cheers,
Stephen

Whats more worrying is the lack of anti virus software!

I get around 15 min per % on my quad core running at around 3ghz. I guess that's a 8 core 3ghz xeon server? very nice

What speed are you running at jez?

Might be 15 mins/frame, but it's doing two frames in that time...->7.5mins/frame overall

When it goes into production, it'll be a DB server, and I just can't afford the hit on the disk IO that that will create.
Additionally, the server is on a non-internet accessible network and the firewall/switch ACLs should prevent most viral threats if somehow an end-users machine were to get infected.
