there is not enough memory to complete this operation

I'm backing up all my stuff just now but i keep getting a "there is not enough memory to complete this operation" message.
I downloaded a hotfix from microsoft, but when i try to install it is says "this update does not apply to your system" which it does. Apparently it's to do with kapersky causing the problem in the first place for some reason (i'm using kapersky internet security 7).

Anyone have any ideas as to what i could try and do to resolve this?

btw, i'm using vista home premium x64, q6600, 2gb ballistix if that helps
just found out that vista only supports 16,384 files being copied at once, that's probably somethihng to do with it too

Probably worth applying Service Pack 1 and trying again, if you haven't already. If you don't fancy applying SP1 before you've backed up the data then try unplugging your internet connection from the PC and disabling the Kapersky stuff first, that will tell you if that's the problem or not.

nope, microsoft do have a hotfix but it didn't work for me for some reason.
i'll try and dig it up again

I still get the problem if i do loads of files, like copying games folders, but i try and cut it down into smaller chunks. Tried turning off kapersky too, didn't work and that was at the same time i had sp1 installed

The description on the micorosft site suggests this happens when copying from one machine to a different one. Is this what you're trying to do or are you copying from one partition to another on a single machine?

If you're doing it between two machines, try doing the copy operation from the other machine, see if it works that way.

Hmm k, i'd keep searching for that error message, I reckon that hotfix probably doesn't apply because you're not trying to do what it says in the error description.

Also, what's the total size of the stuff you're trying to copy? Is there anything getting logged in event viewer when you get the error message? Can you try copying smaller subsets of the overall data at a time?

maybe about 3/4gb but there are thousands of wee files in that, my event logger says that the service is unavaliable for some reason.
Some guy asked the same question as mine over on kapersky forums and one of the kapersky guys replied with that hotfix, and i can copy over subsets of the bit folder so long as they don't have too many files in them.

I did a bit of reading and it looks like Vista is caching the files when it's copying them, then not releasing the cache fast enough so it is in fact running out of memory. Have you tried watching the memory usage display in Task Manager when it's copying? Bear in mind that this isn't strictly a "true" representation of the actual memory load so even if it says you've got heaps free you may not have.

You might also want to test this with Write-Caching disabled on the hard drives. The copy will happen a bit slower but may prove more reliable.

I know it's not in the original request you posted but I'd recommend ditching Kapersky and using another AV app, I really like Avast. I've seen Kapersky cause problems on various XP machines in the past.

yeah, it's way up at like 80%+. Just now it's at 41% when all i've got up are firefox and winamp, with kapersky and steam running in the background, it seems like an awful lot to me

You're lucky then, I have 2GB as well and it sits at about 50% immediately after login, before I even run anything apart from Steam and Avast...

I think we're seeing an inherent Windows problem here. TBH, if I were copying that amount of data around on Windows I'd probably do it in small chunks. Windows is pretty crap in that if even only one file in thousands to be copied is locked, the whole job fails and stops. This is more than just a little annoying, especially when it doesn't tell you the exact path to the file, it's a needle in a haystack...

You could try doing the copy from the command line but use the xcopy command, that may behave differently within the system. Did you try disabling write-caching on the drive as well? Go into Computer Management, into Disk Management then right click the hard disk (not the partition) on the lower pane, hit Properties then the Policies tab. Clear the "Enable write caching" checkbox.

If that doesn't help, I reckon we'll all just have to sit and hope Bill's lot get round to fixing it. Or switch to Linux or Mac
