I want to use vista but it gives me problems

I want to use a copy of vista, But it keeps accessing my hard drive constantly. I'm running a 64bit version also Have 3GB of ram. It also makes my HDD drive run extremely hot. I've been using the good old windows Xp SP3 which has been great.

I'm kinda stuck with a copy vista that i want to use, but not at the expense of my hardware. Any idea's?

Re: I want to use vista but it gives me problems

    Its indexing after install.
The constant hard drive activity stops after a few days. It also stops when using the PC. It just indexes during idle.

Re: I want to use vista but it gives me problems

if it is the indexing thats causing the problem then you could try switching it off. i've got 64bit vista and turned it off so theres no constant accessing. downside now is that when i search for something on the computer it takes longer, but i can live with that which i don't do it much

Re: I want to use vista but it gives me problems

As said, the indexing will settle down after a few days. If you want, you can disable it, Control Panel -> Indexing options. However, indexing really helps searching so it's your call if you need indexing or not.

Re: I want to use vista but it gives me problems

An alternative is to limit the indexing locations further - if you don't need some dirs indexed then configure as appropriate. Tis (on the whole) a good thing though IMHO.

Re: I want to use vista but it gives me problems

Thanks for the input, i need to do a nice clean format. So i was going to try with vista again.

When you say search, do you mean if i wanted to search my hard disk for a file. do you think installing Vista on my sata 2 hdd vs my main Sata hdd will bring benifits also?

Re: I want to use vista but it gives me problems

The indexing system can search anywhere you want, photos, mp3, pdf.. You just add the dir you want to the index location.
You really want to install your OS on your fastest drive. As you are doing a clean install, i would say yes, install vista to the Sata II drive. Or if your mobo has raid capabilities, you could raid 0 a couple of drives.

Re: I want to use vista but it gives me problems

Ok, i'm back after some fun.

Every time i install the ATi video drivers, i get screen artifacts. I set the screen resolution to max but it still not full screen. When i go back to the windows display driver everything is fine.

Question Re: I want to use vista but it gives me problems

What card is it (make/model), and what version drivers are you using?

If you're using the latest drivers, try installing an older set (after uninstalling those you're using just now first of course).
For whatever reason... new driver sets cause problems on some systems?

Re: I want to use vista but it gives me problems

Previous Catalyst Display Drivers for Windows Vista (64 bit)

Disk thrashing in Vista is also caused by SuperFetch (only really happens on start-up) and Windows Defender (disable real-time scanning and scheduled scans - or just disable it altogether).
