Nearly every antivirus/spyware/malware software has completely slowed my computer down, is there any recommended efficient and effective applications out there? Preferably free but don't mind paying for really good performance and results.

Read the 10 or more existing threads on this board that ask almost exactly the same thing?
Summary: Microsoft security essentials x lots, Avast x a few.

If you do go for MSSE. You also need to run periodic checks with other free tools like Superantispyware and/or Malwarebytes.
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
Comodo !! http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-...key1sk3=comodo
Used them for yearsWorked well with XP and even better on W7 Very agressive
Also use spybot ,Advance system care and Malware bytes !! All work like one big protective family![]()
I don't think Nod is as good these days. Used to be the best easily but seems to have dropped off.
Yeh I agree.
I usually used Avira for it's super high detection rates but I'm now using Avast. I think Avast is probably the best free av going at the moment. Although my system is pretty fast so I don't really notice, I have read that Avast is reasonably light on resources compared to other top av progs. If you want something with good protection then there's only so light it can be on resources. I'm pretty sure I've read that cloud based scanners are lighter on your system but I don't really get how. Might be something worth looking into...
NOD used to be really good when I used it, but that isn't free.
I find Avira to be light (until you start a scan). I usually scan with Malware Bytes when I need to because its quite and light.
Avira + Malwarebytes
Yeh forgot to mention also that good on demand scanners are Trend micro housecall, Emsisoft Anti malware & Malwarebytes. Superantispyware is good for tracking cookies also.
Hitman Pro, by SurfRight. It uses cloud detection by 5 different major engines. It's manual tho, so don't expect it to detect anything on access. But you can schedule it, and scan any file you want via right click context menu.

How about trying one that runs from usb. They use their own resources instead of your ram.
Hi Zao
Found this one, mixed reviews though, but maybe you can find something along the same lines
