    Motherboard CDs!!!

Just posting this hoping it might negate a few headaches for self-builds. If you have any weird issues with your system, from freezing to BSOD, check if you have the motherboard utilities installed, and see if removing them resolves the problem.

Over the past few months two of my friends have had serious issues caused by this sort of software; one was getting stuttering in games and very high DPC latency, another was getting BSODs intermittently and under CPU load. Removing the motherboard software resolved both issues.

My general advice would be to just avoid using the motherboard disc unless you need it for e.g. a LAN driver, and even then avoid using the auto-installer. Generally Windows Update will find necessary drivers, but just double-check there's no unidentified hardware in device manager, and if necessary go to the mobo MFR's website and download individual drivers.

    Thanks, this is great advice.
I'm just about to do a fresh install, but I have not used the CD that came with a mobo since my first broadband connection. Once I had a way of ensuring I had the latest drivers I had no excuse for not downloading them and using them instead of the out of date versions that came with the mobo.
I think I'll pass on the mobo utilities, I installed before and then only ran them to see what they looked like, the BIOS is the best tool for making changes and overclocking.

    Re: Motherboard CDs!!!

I'm the same, I've never really used the discs myself so wasn't really aware of the issue, but it seems common enough to affect two friends using different hardware and motherboard manufacturers.

It might not be all that common, but it's definitely something worth ruling out when diagnosing stability issues!

    Re: Motherboard CDs!!!

Which brand of motherboard were they? And what kind of utilities? I have used motherboard CDs on two systems just to get basic drivers and internet going so I can set the rest up myself.

    Re: Motherboard CDs!!!

I fell foul of some shoddy ASUS software like this the other day.

It was their network utility, I think it was 'iNet' or something that was part of the aisuite. Was absolutely killing the connection speed and causing lots of issues (dropped connections and such).
Uninstalled it and everything is perfect.

It's supposed to help manage the traffic, but in reality, it just screwed it up.

    One Asus, one Gigabyte.

@Agent: Yeah my mate said he was also having USB issues which were resolved by removing some fast charge software.

    Re: Motherboard CDs!!!

I recently built a new Z97 system and had a weird problem with FanXpert 3. The kindest thing I can say about it is that it is stupid. You are much better ditching the AiSuite and using the BIOS to configure fans on the newer boards than going through FanXpert 3. I also had a weird problem with the USB 3.0 speed boost thing in AiSuite, I borrowed a USB 3.0 3.5' drive to test it. In Windows, got around 120MB/s, turned the speed boost on and it fell to 40MB/s. Haven't done much more testing since I got rid of the god awful AiSuite because of the fan problems.

Ahhhh..... Did those issues include peripherals randomly disconnecting whilst in use, such as scanners dropping a connection mid scan etc... I don't even use the fast charge but I think I installed that software.

There's a useful list of BSOD-related drivers here, a little outdated now (updated Feb. '13) but you can input a driver name xxxxxxxx.sys into the DRT linked near the top, or into the mirror at Sysnative for details including likely download sites. The DRT is updated frequently.

Both sites are very useful for troubleshooting BSODs.

  10. Received thanks from:

Yeah that's the same sort of thing he was getting.

That looks really interesting, I'll definitely keep it bookmarked for future reference!
