Hi all,
Very long time since I've posted. I'm hoping someone can help....
I have an ageing media server that runs Ubuntu 9.10. I haven't upgraded it, because everything just works (well, it until now).
I use it to run Logitech Media Server (was Squeezebox server), and it is also one of my backup servers.
The disk is partition so that there is an initial 15GB boot area that Ubuntu lives in, and another which mounts /home and where my music and backups are stored.
The other day, the server failed to boot. On investigation, I was told there were disk errors and fsck may be necessary. So, stupidly, I decided to run fsck -f, and thats where it all went pear-shaped. I don't recall what error I saw, but it wasn't good.
I rebooted, only to be presented with the dreaded 'GRUB Rescue' prompt. An 'ls' there showed my various disk partitions, and indicated that the partition with all my content was fine, but the boot bit was missing. I tried running the Linux Rescue CD I've seen recommended, and telling it to 'repair', but that made no difference. I tried to restore grub using the rescue CD as well, but that resulted in what I have now - no boot at all.
Now, when I boot, the machine tells me there is nothing to boot and stops. I have run the 9.10 Live CD, and used the disk tools, which tell me there is a 15GB partition, it is marked as bootable, but otherwise unknown. At least my content partition, holding /home, and my backups/music is fine, I know that.
My question - before I go a just re-install Ubunut from scratch on the 15GB partition, is there any way of getting the old stuff back? It is has been running for a long time, and there are all sorts of things configured which I can't remember, and I would hate to have to start again!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Muts.
