right click on my computer , then select manage.
expand "services & applications" then select services.
highlight the messenger service & stop it. Then go to its properites and set it startup type to "manual".

    This shoudl stop the popups.

if you're on the internet when this happens - get the googler toolbar (advanced version) and turn on pop-up blocking in the options.

if you're on windows 2000 or XP and get these "message to ip address from..." then go to control panel / administrator / services and disable the messenger service. this will block it.

alternatively try ad-aware in case there's stuff like GAIN / Gator etc on your pc.

2 Programs to use for scanning for Spyware-
    Adaware - http://atomnet.co.uk/?p=programs&search=adaware
    SpyBot S&D - http://atomnet.co.uk/?p=programs&search=spybot

Those are always worth having around, just in case. Spybot takes longer, but is more thourough.

To stop internet popups use a browser such as Mozilla or Firebird. You won't be able to live with IE after you have used Firebirds tabbed browsing.

But yeah, first thing to do when you install Windows is dissable the Messenger service. Nothing but trouble.

Mozilla also has tabbed browsing. Now why doesn't Microsoft go assimilate that, eh?

the google toolbar popup stopper is great, it just works. And you get a google search box in the top left corner all the time.
For joy, apparently, it was all Franny could do to hold the phone, even with both hands.

Agreed. I'ed tried 3 diferent pop up stoppers with IE last year and whilst they all worked to an extent - you tended to need to use a hotkey for links they inevitably thought were popups all the time.

When you use mozilla, you dont actually realise that it has a built in pop up stopper. Probably the same with most built in browser ones such as the crazy one mentioned.

Using mozila is a bit like using the net 3+ years ago (but with tabs). Popups just dont exist, pages load at lightning speed, offline browsing is about as good as IE4 and you get a fair few 'broken' web pages that dont work properly
