    windows 2000, corrupt file... help!

ok... pc had been running fine for the past couple of weeks since i got a new mobo (is7-e) and installed win2k (sp3 and all the stuff off windows update - not sp4 tho).. borrowed a mates stick of ram today, turned off server, inserted ram to create the lovely 'dual channel' goodness. booted up...

"the file c:\winnt\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt.. blah blah blah"

think 'oh dear', reboot. no joy. safe mode, no joy... i copied the file off another computer i have (burnt to cd, booted up with win98 cd, copied to c:\winnt\system32 'yes i want to overwrite'.. think i've solved the problem, reboot... windows starts to load, but at the end of the coloured dos loading bit it BSODs and reboots (too fast for me to read the message).. remove ram, no joy, try one stick at a time, no joy... what is going on with the computer!!

    any help appreciated

I'm afraid to say your windows install is b0rked.

The only thing you can do is to reinstall windows over the top or to a seperate partition / folder and recover your files .
