    Broken PS3!!

I was playing PES last night when the game suddenly froze. Since then the drive will not read any discs at all! The swirly thing comes up in the top right of the XMB as if its trying to read it but never does anything. I can play videos and demos fine, its just the drive is screwed.

I've tried all different types of discs and they all do the same. I think its time to return it...although I cant find the receipt so its gonna have to go back to Sony.

Anyone got any ideas how long it takes Sony to turn these around?
    Anyone else had this problem?

I've read about a few people having this problem, and a few times it's been solved by formatting the hard-drive, something to do with corrupt data?? not sure that will work.

That's bad to hear mate, is yours a 40gb version?

Yeah, its the 40Gb version with an upgraded HDD. I'm gonna try formatting tonight and see what happens. Either way I'm exchanging it in case it does it again!

I called Sony this morning and they are sending me out another PS3, but I won't get it until 30th July. I suppose 2 weeks isn't too bad and they did pick up the phone immediately. Very friendly, quick service actually.

Im on my 2nd PS3, mine also stopped reading disks. They replaced mine the NEXT DAY at my door though. To say the experience with sony customer support was excellent would be an understatement.

They must be busy then as he said the computer assigns the delivery date and mine is 2 weeks away! Its going to be a nice, shiny black paper weight from now on...

If I hadn't lost the receipt when I moved I'd just walk back into Zavvi and get it exchanged

I tried the formatting and changing the HDDs but no joy.

Just as an update, I got the PS3 exchanged at Zavvi over the weekend. The 40Gb stock seems to be getting pretty low around the country in preparation for the launch of the 80Gb model which replaces it.

    Re: Broken PS3!!

Update on my friends broken PS3, he formatted this moring with no luck. All that happened was he was playing CM Dirt then turned tv to standby went out to pick me up and got back to his house and turned tv on and the screen was all black.
Turned on ps3 and held for 5 seconds to get the 2 beeps turned to AV mode and it worked the it came up with found HDMI cable will change for 30 seconds press ok...to black screen?
Anyways he phoned Sony (he has no receipt and has had the console for about 6 months) Sony were very good and will be replacing it on his doorstep this Wednesday.

    Red Ring Of Fail?

You PS3 n00bs don't know you are born when it comes to consoles going wrong.

On your 2nd one? I know people on their 5th Xbox.

Delievered a new one to your door? Real men wait 10 days or so while it gets shiped to Germany for repair.

Sony have a long way to go and much to learn if they want to match Microsofts level of bumbling incompetence.
