Sounds odd, especially because you can connect to PS Home. You need to be either NAT 1 or 2, NAT 1 is for a direct connection and NAT 2 for a router connection, so you're fine.

Do any other games work online?

In the network settings you can click on status and it will provide you with a list. That will tell you your NAT type, whether uPnP is on and whether or not you can connect to various PS services. Run that and post the results.

    Re: ps3 problem

You could also try adding the both DNS servers of your ISP or OpenDNS to your configuration instead of the single router Address (I'm assuming this is how its' set at the moment).

You tried running a couple of speedtests from the PS3's browser just to rule out throughput?

I had a similar problem and just bunged the PS3 into DMZ, that sorted the problem of random ports opening.

Pick your speedtest site of choice (I used http://www.speedtest.net/) and run it from the PS3 browser.
