Re: Champions league Thread
We shall see.
That is one match vs Arsenal. He took it well ![]() Thing is, Pele and Maradona, to use your examples (include Van Basten/Ruud Gullit in that aswell), consistently performed at a world class level ON a world class stage AGAINST world class teams. BTW....i am old enough to remember Maradona in his prime and i cant even remember him being a penalty taker.Hand on heart, can you say that Ronaldo does? Henry was also an outstanding talent, but just like Ronaldo (maybe except for the game in 2005 vs Madrid), he also never performed on the greatest stages. There is no doubt he is exeptionally good. But the best in the world......he isnt. |

Doesn't say much for the rest of the Barca attack all match..... Match was dull. Semi's in this competition are usually dull from my recollection over the last 4-5 seasons. Yet suprisingly the finals are usually much better affairs.... Ronaldo is by far and away the best player in the world this season, even with the penalty miss. The quality of his goals have been simply sublime all season. Player of the season is exactly that over the whole season. I don't see anyone else having produced the level of quality in finishing from free kicks, headed goals, tap ins, back heal ins. I'm no fan of any of the top clubs, I'm happier watching Mk Dons vs Wycombe than I am Man Utd vs Barca, But i'm a lover of football and in my opinion if Ronaldo doesn't win world player of the year then something is majorly wrong. Re: Champions league Thread
I watched the MU/Barca game and Ronaldo was poor. I've already sent a really nice present to Sir Alex. It's a set of guide wires and tent pegs so that he can tie Ronaldo down to stop him falling down in a mild breeze during training. Poor lad, anyone would think he was two dimensional the way he folds. He is without doubt an exceptional player, but unless he can grow up and learn that if he stops falling down at the slightest provocation, with his hands in the air, he will undoubtedly become one of the games greats and referees, players and fans alike will have more respect for him.
Man U did a job on Barca. They were playing such a weird set of players for the chosen system. Hampered by injury at the back and forcing Hargreaves into RB says a lot. Park on the left ?? Ronaldo seemed to play centre forward most of the match and Rooney and Tevez looked out of place even though both worked their nuts off either side. Scholes played a defensive role!! and did OK especially with possession and choice of pass, but it was such an unnatural role with Carrick to the right. Disciplined and tight they never really had much trouble until Henry came on. Barca had no ideas in the final 1/4 of the pitch, they lacked width and inventiveness. I think we'll see a changed, revitalised MU side that are going to look to slice Barca up within the first half an hour, knowing that they won't have too much to defend against in the return match.

Re: Champions league Thread
Anyone see the Rangers vs Fiorentina game?
Me being a celtic fan aside, I think Rangers play is shockingly boring! They've scored 1 goal at home in their last 5 UEFA cup games :/ |

Re: Champions league Thread
Right, let's put the team-flaming behind us all and start anew.
![]() Champions League is back in action tonight, Man Utd vs Barcelona, second leg, what are your predictions? I'm going to stick with what I said previously, 4-2 to Man Utd. It's such a tricky game, and anything could happen. In my opinion though, Man Utd need to go all out with the mentality of "we must score more than them." Barca's defence is suspect, and Utd have to take advantage. If Utd try to keep it tight and go for a 1-0 win, I can see Barca nicking a goal - that away goal will put Utd in all sorts of trouble. Utd surely have to go for as many goals as possible? Really looking forward to the game, it can't be as boring as the first leg. |

Remember 2000, against Real Madrid where we got 0-0 at the Bernabeu, but we then lost 3-2 at Old Trafford (the one which Roy Keane scored an own goal ).

Tell me about it, I'm getting goosebumps already. But, maybe that's half the fun? Makes it all the more special if we do manage to pull it off.

Re: Champions league Thread
There we go then, English teams rule Europe, the Premiership rules Europe.
3 out of 4 semi finalists 2 years running, an all English final, English winners. So not only is our league the most exciting, but now unarguably has the best teams. Could do with a Man U - Liverpool final now, that would be special.

Re: Champions league Thread
I need some blood pressure meds
A very very very nerve racking game, but we deserved to go through. Everyone played well and it was a lovely goal by the ginger man.
