Re: The official Beijing Olympics Thread
Chinese women are usually slim anyway, but I wonder how much weight those front line cheerleaders have lost throughout training and this day

Re: The official Beijing Olympics Thread
The opening ceremony would have been a lot more awesome if I wasn't aware of the oppressive way the Chinese authorities have suppressed any hint of dissent ..... not to mention arresting people that might have protested, knocked down other's homes and forceably relocated them and generally acted like the obnoxious bully boys they are. A load of people dancing and a fireworks display just tries to put a flashy face on the disgrace that sits behind all this.
Am I impressed by this display? No, largely because I turn off any TV channel when it comes on. I don't care how flashy or impressive it is. It can't mask the regime behind it and just hands them a PR coup. |

Re: The official Beijing Olympics Thread
I'm not arguing in support of the Chinese Government at all, I'm largely an advocate of major reform in China myself, but the ceremony was excellent as a performance - and that's all it should be taken as. I know a lot of people will want to get on the moral high ground and see it as support for everything the Chinese Government stand for, or similar effect, ...well....that's down to each person's prerogative I suppose. The Olympic Games provide a platform for international voice, it's a shame it's under such controversy. |

Re: The official Beijing Olympics Thread
I was mildly surprised that no discussion were made at all during the torch relay, amidst all the controversies. I would've been too busy at the time to participate anyway as I was preparing for my exam, but it was kinda everywhere whenever I looked at the news at the time.

Re: The official Beijing Olympics Thread
To be honest, there should be little comment on these olympics which is not political. It's a bit of a shame that more athletes aren't boycotting the games.

It just takes place in a different stadium every 4 years. ![]() 776 BC in Olympia, Greece - fireworks and dancing. 2008 AD in Bejing, China - fireworks and dancing. 4500 AD in Alpha City 6, Mimas, Saturn - fireworks and dancing. |
