I think she got very close to £2000! Even second hand basic models can go for upwards of £500. I guess that makes them a reasonable investment, but it makes it hard to get on the ladder...!

I'd consider bromptondock as an alternative if there's one close by: at only £2.50 a day it's a very reasonable price for bike hire. The only issue for me is that they're the L-spec with front luggage clip rather than R-spec, so you have to have special brompton luggage to carry your bikes on them. If they did the R-spec so you could use ordinary panniers they'd be ideal (IMNSHO).

    Re: Commuting with a bike

I live in runcorn now so the commute is only about 15-17 miles door to door

I'll either use my road bike (Jammis Xenith Comp 2013) Or might buy another bike to use

With me not using the trains then the need for a foldable bike is no more.

    Commuting with a bike

I do all my miles commuting and have only been "training" properly since Christmas. Ive made great gains by using interval training - isnt Strava a useful tool here. If youve got a 2, 4, and 8 minute segment on your route then work out a plan when you target one or more of these every other commute?
