4+ hours of running?? I think we've read different books :)
I wonder how many people trying to go paleo actually go out foraging and accept that if they don't find any food they have to go hungry...? ;)
Not to mention they didn't have farmed animals so ate a mostly plant based diet (as hunting is unreliable at best). Most people seem to treat it as an excuse to tuck into a big steak dinner every night.
As long as there are no chips with it and no ice-cream after, the big steak dinner is fair game. As is just eating cabbage... I think the key point of the thing is eat less grain / starch / high carb foods that your ancestors wouldn't normally find as a forager - the 'paleo' term is a bit of a target for cynics.
Depending on region they ate quite a lot of starch - foraged tubers (think sweet potatoes and the like) were a staple in areas where they grew. I'm not convinced that it matters what my ancestors ate anyway since we have evolved since then (despite what the paleo evangelists say). The ability to metabolise grains and similar starchy foods is well developed in modern humans, as is the ability to digest lactose in regions where dairy cattle where kept. Roughly 95% of people of Northern European origin are lactose tolerant, if that isn't evidence that we have evolved to a farmed diet, I don't know what is.
This is why I'm wary of the 'paleo' term. For me I'm not fussed about recapturing my ancestral genepool, I just want something that works. And in my case what triggered the interest is being a type 1 diabetic, so insulin is a big part of my life whether I like it or not.
Been trying a toned-down version of the paleo diet for about 3 weeks now. Hasn't killed me yet, although I've definetly noticed the lack of instant energy hit from carbs when exercising. They say this is normal and that the body has to readjust to burning fat instead. Don't know - time will tell. I'm on under half the synthetic insulin I was taking a month ago.
As with all diet and fitness regimens, suits some, not others. Personally I am too lazy and too bust with work/home life balance to be able to stick to it any more than on an ad-hoc basis. I have read a couple of Paleo fitness and Paleo diet books out of professional interest and they have some merits, but in today's society it is doomed to fail like every other (dare I say FAD) diet/exercise plan.
For those that stick at it and get their desired results, respect due. :)

There is a good case for the stone age diet as being very useful in identifying food intolerances and allergies.
Just eat fresh fish, meat, fruit and veg and bottled mineral water for a month, then add suspect items in one at a time. I now know I have a gluten and lactose intolerance, which is hardly surprising considering how recently in man's evolution these items have been introduced, we haven't been evolving quick enough to be able to assimilate them happily.
I used to follow the Eat Right For Your Type/Blood Group diet many moons ago. As an O blood group the theory was a Paleo type diet was ideal (they believe the different blood groups evolved over time, with O being the earliest.)
It's been criticised as being bad science, I can't comment on that but I do know I never felt better for the time I was following it. It was just a right old pain trying to stick to it, though.
The blood type thing is total hogwash, however in your case they just happened to recommend a diet that can have useful effects so it worked. That's nothing to do with whether you're type O blood or not though, the effect would be similar for people with other blood types.
Paleo isn't bad per se; eating more protein and less processed carbs is, for most people, a good thing (not least due to sugar reduction). Going completely zealot on it is taking it too far though.
