Re: Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

Just downloaded endomondo on my Q5 and AFAICT it's fixing GPS properly - now just need to test it on a journey (may give it a pop on my commute home). I don't care too much about signing up for free apps - got to give something back to the developers and I can just use either a throwaway email or filter the spam using rules.

My only real problem with workout trackers is that they will never be able to track my current favourite sport - rock climbing! Given the accuracy of most phone GPS and the length of the climbs I tend to do, they're probably all within margin of error on the tracking!

I use rock climbing on Endomondo and its not bad if you half the time.

If I'm bouldering for 2 hours I'll throw in 1 hour on the app. If I'm top roping I'll just make note of how many accents I make and do 10x5min = 50min of climbing.

Using HRM one time it wasn't far off what it guessed itself.

OK.... Splash I used it for a walk round to a neighbours and it was accurate

glad to have something work again

    thank you...

if I continue running I'll sign up and we can encourage each other.. I get the feeling that when it's on... it tells you I'm running and you can encourage me!!!

that's funny and scary in itself ;-)

You can indeed, it's kinda amusing if you're out for a run with headphones on and you get a cheer or a jeer from someone.

Solid pace there Peter, not hit the streets this week, but I might see if I can squeeze 5k out in the morning and see how I do.

Is that using GPS tracking or do you have one of those gadgety things that records heart rate and stuff? If it works I'd be quite interested to track some of my outdoors stuff.

Recorded the ride home last night with Endomondo on my Blackberry Q5 and it seemed to work perfectly, tracking my route along the roads to within a metre or so.

Then I checked the workout on the endomondo website and - as with all other apps I've used on the BB - it borked horribly on the altitude tracking, reckoning I'd ascended 140ft and descended 103ft on a practically flat ride through central Manchester. So I exported the data and uploaded it into my strava profile, which tracked the ride, ignored the elevation data from the GPS and used the elevation data from gmaps instead, which says a much more reasonable ~35ft elevation change.

So it looks very much like I'll be sticking to endomondo for tracking my workouts for now, but use strava for logging/sharing them. I think I'll also start logging trips to/from local landmarks rather than the house* - I'm not overly keen on posting maps in a public forum with door to door trips between home and work

*EDIT: Just discovered privacy zones on Strava - automatically hides places you don't want logging! So, now I can happily share http://www.strava.com/activities/166464443 with you Altitude still looks a little funky to me, particularly that 20ft climb between 0.7m and 0.9m (which just isn't there on the road) but overall it looks alright and I suspect that for longer journeys and bigger climbs it'll be near enough for my purposes!

Re: Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

Runtastic failed to work last night for first 1 1/2 miles.... I rebooted it while I was running and it kicked in and started working.. got my .5 mile reminders 3 times.. then it told me I had to upgrade to pro for any more

I know Apps need paying for eventuially but first they gotta work and I need to KNOW they work properly before buying... really winds me up.

Re: Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

and as an aside and because the virtual running threads not "live" .. yet....

first run part was 1 1/2 miles according to Google maps.. was all roads.. and was quickish for me, and felt like about 6.5 mph judging by how hard it felt (no.. I'm not fast).. then rebooted and slowed up as I knew I wanted to do some distance.. Runtastic had me cutting a corner that I ran all the way around in real life on account of the block of flats in the middle of it so at one point I did 42mph asccording to runstatic.... and overall distance after reboot to home was 3.88 miles at 5.7mph. Had to stop 3 times to crouch and stretch my knees that were on fire. So overall was about 5.3 miles and was 57 minutes on my watch.

crap speed, pleased with my resiliences to run past the short cuts home and push out of town before turning.. and it was about 24 degrees the whole way and the temp didnt effect me at all.. I'd have looked that bad even if it was 10degrees C

Re: Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

Keeping up a reasonable pace this week, 3.94K in 25 minutes on the treadmill, followed (after a bit of weights) by 15 minutes on a stepper - alternating between 1 minute step and 1 minute stride. According to the Heart Rate monitor (Polar) burnt off around 1000 Calories. Not that I'm bothered about the calories, just maintaining aerobic fitness.

I haven't run this week... but I did do 102km (63miles) on the bike on Sunday. 1100m (a shade under 4000ft) of climbing in there, at 25kmh (15 and a but mph). OUCH.
