Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

    Lo people

Drank plenty water last night, no alcohol and didn't know why (didnt fancy a drink which is v v odd for me)

My body was getting me ready for a run I think... couldn't stop thinking about running all morning.. and how much I hate it.. and how much I wonder if I can still do it after... nearly half a YEAR!!

    It's warm today, about 24 C but that's ok.

trainers on... Run Keeper on my android (which failed again... that's another story)

It was hard going... I slowed to a very stead jog.. prolly too slow really.. and awaited my energy levels to arrive.. and then remember to breathe deeper. Dunno WHY I do it, but I don't breathe properly naturally when I run. Have to force myself to fill the lungs hard and fast. And then I found my natural (still bloody horrible feeling) rythm.. and I've jsut used Google Maps and it was between 3.5 and 4 miles.

Time? Goodness knows.... way over half an hour though sadly. But not over 45 minutes... so not appaling.

Dunno why Run Keeper is so crap on Android. On the iPone from my previous job it was rock solid and dead accurate. But Android seems all over on Sat Nav.

Anyway.. got back in a right sweaty mess, ... stretched a bit to loosen up, showered...

    and then the CRAVINGS started.

gotta follow your cravings in my opinion after hard excersize (probably not hard for you super-fit people but it was harrowing for me )

    Celery!!!!

    Explain THAT then!!!??

Ate 3 sticks... felt brand new!

Thats pretty good if you haven't done any running for a while. I managed ! 1/2 in just under 12 minutes this morning on a treadmill - if I slow down, on a good day I can just about manage 5K in 30 minutes, but that is after a long period (nearly 11 months) of building up my fitness.

Re: Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

I started a bit last year, from nothing, and was advised to run in bursts, so doing 2 mins running, then 2 mins walking, and flicking from one to the other, increasing the speed of each aspect as I felt more capable.

It felt a bit stupid to start with, slowing down after 2 mins, but it was pretty effective at keeping me going. I found I could do an hour pretty easily, and if I kept the pace of the walking up I could cover a pretty reasonable distance as well.

I think more than anything the 2 minute intervals kept me going. It's much easier when your goal is never more than 2 mins away.

I need the treadmill to force the pace! I end up hanging on to it forcing my legs to keep going on!

I started by doing interval running - 1 min at 7 Km/h and a minute at about 9.5 Km/h - for 10 minutes and that was enough. That was 12 months ago. It just takes time - but I do try and spend an hour a day in the gym, 5 days a week.

I agree with the moveable goals. I usualy start by setting up 15 minutes, then increasing it by three or four minutes as I get close to the end.

Re: Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

for me it's about massacring my self doubt and seeing if I crumble

If I crumble.. I have to do summit about it

I have discussed interval training with a few mates..and I have decided that, if my life or someone elses, was at stake and I needed to make a distance as fast as possible.. it would be ideal.... run until you cant.. walk fast while recovering... run again....

but for now... I'm just seeing what type of a pathetic creature I've become

Re: Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

I've yet to find an even half-decent app for tracking exercise - on Android or on BB10 (now I've got a Q5). I reckon the basic GPS built into a phone just isn't up to decent tracking, tbh. If you really want to track exercise routines I think the only sensible thing is to buy a proper tracker. Keep getting tempted by some of the Garmin bike computers ... cycle computer, route tracker and sat nav all in one! Shame about the price....

    iPhone 4 was spot on...

    with Run Keeper it rocked

But on Runkeeper for me on both new and old Android.. it's all over the place....

Re: Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

Endomondo does a good job of tracking, on all platforms. My adventure racing team / buds and I all use it, and have for years. About 15 of us.

I've been focusing on earning a living this year, so most of my normal racing has taken a back seat. Just landed a big contract, so agreed with the wif to enter the Poole Questars race on Sept 6th. Will be 6hrs of mtb, trail running and some kayaking on the harbour, for under £50. All involving navigation by compass and map, in teams of 1 - 4 peeps.

Is funny how signing up for it has changed my training regime. Goals always focus me, so rather than the normal stuff, suddenly up a gear. All in the head.

My current speed is around 10k cross country in 45 mins.

Anyone looking for a goal, sign up! Lack of fitness is no obstacle, since it is a point-based race - you grab as many checkpoints as you feel capable of, rather than a set route.

One can never stop saying Thank You

Just went to find the app for Blackberry. There are about 50 reviews in the last couple of days, all 1 star, complaining that the last update broke tracking and massively increased battery drain.

    Ah well...

I'm certainly not as fit as I'd like to be, and try to run with someone else at least once a week, as well as on my own some mornings. I'm on Runtastic which I find fine on Android (though sometimes it flips out and requires a phone restart to see my Polar heart rate monitor...) - if anyone else is using that and wants to hook up on there for a little friendly competition (not anywhere near your league Fuddam!) drop me a PM. I've been working in London for the last week on a big project so I've had no time to run, but I need to get moving again this week I think.

Re: Just run 3.5 miles : first run for months

+1 for Endomondo, I moved over to it on Android as it was one of the only apps that support smart bluetooth HRM's and everything else about the app I like (you can normally find discount codes for free or extremely cheap premium).

I started a big fitness kick about 6 months ago when I thought it would be a good idea to sign up to a Tough Mudder.

I was 102kg @ 6'1" and haven't done any real exercise in years, along with a bad diet. Now my diet is better, I cycle about 100miles a week commuting and run at least twice a week (normally only 5km @ 28-30min mark).

Down to 92kg, best shape I've been in in over a decade and last Saturday completed said 11.4 mile Tough Mudder course

I still dislike solo running, I find it extremely boring and its just no comfortable but hey... its good exercise and it leads to doing fun events
