That was disappointing. On one hand, I have gruellingly crushed my previous personal record of 46km walked in a day by walking 71km before yesterday. Unfortunately, to complete the event I still had another 50km to do on the following day, and I realised within the first 10km because there was no way it was going to happen on the 1 hour sleep I managed to get on the first day.

It seems to me that I suffer from a 40km wall. The amount of weight I carry doesn't seem to have a major impact (I was carrying 17kg when I did the 46km hike, and about 8km this time). Until 40km, I can keep up a very decent pace without feeling any stress. But after I hit 40km, the pain I feel in my feet increase exponentially with each step, slowing me to an halt (which is why I arrived so late and ended up with so little time to sleep) and I am in utter agony long before 50km. It is really frustrating because it isn't stamina or even muscle pain (there was some but bearable), and I didn't even have a single blister. But the pain I felt with each step was excruciating.

Went climbing yesterday, not much physical pain, but a lot of mental pain. Got on a route called "The Coffin" which was aptly named as there were 6 gear placements in 33 metres of climbing, and the climbing was really sustained to boot. Oh and I pulled a hold off in the first few metres of climbing which really doesn't help with keeping calm! Really thought about abandoning it halfway up, but the gear so so bad I thought it safer to crack on.
One of the most terrifying routes I've ever climbed.

Started trampoline back in April and it has been great fun. It is deceptively easy to get injured, but you really (re)learn how to control every parts of your body to generates spins and turns in the air. I am hoping this will assists my jumps in snowboarding when winter comes.

Decided to start running this week, not as bad at it as I feared. Managed 4 km today in about 25 mins, not too bad I think. It's too hot though.

Butcher, I haven't browsed back through the thread, and it's been a while since I've been on the forums, so forgive me if this is ignorant: have you done much running before?

so... at the back end of last year I signed up to run the York 10k again (I ran it previously 6 years back to prove to myself that 30 doesn't mean death). I trained hard through January and part of February and got myself to the point where I could break 50 mins. I then got lazy and started coming up with any old excuse to not bother going out to train.

2 weeks ago I got a "Good Luck!" email from the organisers which came as a bit of a shock. I've since completed 3 training runs (all under 7km) and 1 25 mile bike ride. I've spent all of this week on the booze at the York Fringe.

I just finished the 10k in 51:33, which beats my previous time (that I trained solidly for 4 months to attain) by almost 7 minutes. I'm a bit chuffed, to say the least.

Imagine if I had the self control to actually train...

I was thinking about it, but Run For All have just launched a 10 mile circuit which runs the same day as the Yorkshire Marathon in October so I'm planning to *actually* train and try to finish that one as a stepping stone to a proper half marathon.

Re: Motivate Me: The HEXUS Excercise thread : post your pain ;-)

Well I have been super lazy the past year folks. As a teacher I push everything off and say "When I'm off this summer I'll do loads!. Well, I go back to work tomorrow (sigh) and I did nothing but play games and watch films! (And organise for a wedding next summer!). Meaning I have put on a bit of weight. I now weigh 103kg :O

My hope is to start using the treadmills in our school, after classes 3-4 times a week for 30 mins.

Any tips? Never used one before and as a 6ft 6 inch person, never really been into jogging lol.

Well my 10 mile target has just gone out of the window - on Wednesday a lad rode into me as I was walking home. Result - broken rib, which means no training for a minimum 3 weeks.

I'll pick up again when I can breathe deeply without too much pain.

Nothing specific around the height, but focus on length of run rather than speed. If you can rope in a friend to train with you it'll really help with the motivation. Also try to schedule your runs in advance, that way you're not getting to the end of the week having put runs off for a day or 2.

These things work for me, may not work for you.

Re: Motivate Me: The HEXUS Excercise thread : post your pain ;-)

@Neonplanet40 - I don't know what your level of fitness is, but I would stay away from treadmills if I were you. Hate the things personally. It's way better to get out in the fresh air, at least there's something to look at.

I recommend looking for a closed loop to run around, if you're going on a loop rather than and out and back trail, you're less likely to turn around and head back early. This is also another reason I don't like treadmills.

Consider your local park run. It's 5k and free to enter, and timed so you can see how you're improving. I guarantee you won't be last - in fact there's usually someone running as a back marker.

I will caveat this by saying I'm not a great runner, (or swimmer, or cyclist, in fact it's only when you bundle the 3 together that I reach the heady heights of mediocrity).

    Also see this:

    http://theoatmeal.com/comics/running

This is basically me. The full book is worth getting too, if only for the picture of 'that one guy in the socks' which all runners will recognise, and the cyborg death treadmill.

I managed to pull my lower back yesterday whilst doing my warmup for deads...

6 total reps before it went. #ouch

After a lot of abuse to my knees from cycling, I am finally determined to work out how to stop them being so weak. It's not too bad - I just feel weak climbing the stairs to my flat after a long ride (~>50mi). I don't reckon it's my saddle/cleat position so I'm just going to beef them up doing squats and wall sits (yay!..) starts today!
