Recommend me a decent dumbbell set

Hi fitness fanatics! I'm looking to get a set of dumbells for home use, I think 30kg is a good start and they can be found for £25ish on eBay but I don't know whether to spend more on a "decent" set? What would that extra money be going towards? Vinyl are cheaper but do I really need cast weights?

    Any suggestions appreciated!

    Rob

Re: Recommend me a decent dumbbell set

I had a few vinyl coated concrete plates when I first started free weights at home, I ditched them for cast iron after a while because they were too big, concrete weights have a volume double that of cast iron weights of the same mass. Problematic, because with concrete plates I found dumbbells were too unwieldy and I couldn't fit enough concrete weights on the ends of my barbell.

Currently, I'm very happy with the bargain basement pair of dumbbell and 4' barbell bars, along with all the 2" (Olympic) cast iron plates I've ammased off ebay.

Re: Recommend me a decent dumbbell set

Vinyl weights were ok for me until I started using more than 30lb dumbells and more than 90lbs on a barbell. After that I just couldn't physically get more plates onto the bars as per what DDY said. I sold them a couple of years ago and bought a cheap bench and a 60kg cast iron set which I've added to slowly as I've needed to. With hindsight that's what I should have done in the first place but that's me.

if you close your eyes so you dont see the price of these and just buy them they are well worth the money for the fact they stack up neatly and theres no plates lying around. Google powerblocks and remember dont look at price
