Supermarket fruit is rediculously expensive. Try a local green grocers, better value. Peoples general perception is that supermarkets are cheap because they are big. rubbish. Headline items are cheap, some things are probably about what they should cost, everything else is far more expensive that it should be.

There's no greengrocers in the town where I live and the local supermarket is Somerfield, which in my experience has the worst quality fruit and veg.
I could get stuff where I work from Croydon market - good prices with about 6 stalls competing - but unless I remember to take in carrier bags, I can guarantee that the skimpy market carriers will break on the train going home.
Innocent smoothies are too expensive for me - apart from when on special offer. This means I only get my fruit quota in about 3-4 weeks of the year.
Recently Which magazine said that home juicing was not much cheaper than pre-made smoothies and they claimed that there would be more nutrition in home juiced than pre-made 'cos it was fresher. I would like to see evidence behind claims like this. My instinct tells me that pre-made smoothies could be more nutritious if their fruit was picked riper and had travalled less far and was sealed quick enough before too much oxidation had occurred.

It's true that you should really be getting a mix of fruit and vegatables for your five a day. It's not just the vitamins, it's the fibre, and even the effect that having it at the same time as other food has that's useful.

It's getting easier to have organic fruit + veg delivered to your home now as well - several farms have been getting together and offering a weekly/fortnightly service - something like abel&cole or many others.

If you want the best out of smoothies don't buy anything that says on the ingredients something like this :

    apple 23%From Concentrate

    instead get something that says:

apple23% NFC - Not From Concentrate.

You want avoid the from concentrate stuff. I believe that the from concentrated stuff is rehydrated just before its dispatched to the supermarket/shop. It's stuff which has previously had all its moisture boiled off and there for its nutritional value boiled off. They do this because the moisture adds a lot of weight and takes up room during transport. If they remove the moisture they can transport more in the same amount of space which reflects in a cheaper price to the customer.

Any smoothies with primarily berries or citrus fruits in them are highly acidic as well. I always drink half a glass of water after having such a smoothie since the acid can and will eat away at the enamel on your teeth.

I find that Innocent are the best at the moment, id much rather spend the money on one of them than a pack of mars bars for example.

sainsburys own brand of OJ beats tropicana every time... keeps the nice tanginess of real oranges. tropicana is kinda thick and pasty tasting

P&J's or something similar smoothies are good 100% real fruit etc.. go for those.

in ur smoothie at work its probaly refering to shots of fruit puree rather than whole fruits. mangoes are pretty big

Even not from concentrate juices are still frozen and/or pastuerised, so not as good as fresh.

I just buy my Fruhli beers now...I seriously doubt it has any health benefit whatsoever, but it tastes nice, and gets you drunk...eventually

And leave Hex alone harry, he's a nice guy

Home made smoothies are where its at, they taste much better made fresh than the innocent ones!

I like mixing up loads of different fruits:

    e.g.

    handfuls of crushed ice
    kiwi
    banana
    strawberry
    blueberry

    delicious!
