Weekend Project - Fix my Gateway
My trusty Linux Gateway has become unreliable so this weekend I'm busy installing a new version or Clarkconnect. Actually, it's already done. Now all I have to do is isntall the USB ADSL modem.
The only snag is that some git called Linus made kernel 2.6 and everything's changed, so all the experience I gained from installing the modem last time is nearly useless. I find it strangely fun, though! Now, has that kernel recompiled yet.... |

Oooh, random error in the compilation process.
I took the HSF off to find the arctic silver had practically separated itself out. I've applied some AS5 now, and a newer heatsink. Fingers crossed it's stabilised. Compiling the kernel is about the most strenuous thing it'll ever do... |

Interrupted the compilation last night after making clean and starting over. After several errors which I think were heat related, I didn't want to risk any errors in the compiled code. Since restarting the compilation I've had no errors, and it's still going strong upon resuming it this morning.

Got the kernel recompiled (finally) and the system is just about ready. The modem WORKS, but I can't get a ppp connection yet, purely because it needs configuring.
I'll finish when I have the time... other things to do now

I got a ppp connection last night, but the IP of the remote gateway was malformed. I have been tweaking the scripts, but haven't got to to reconnect since
![]() Will have another go tonight. |

Wooo! Got the thing to work. I did cheat though.
Went back from the driver supporting kernel 2.6.10 and used the older version on 2.6.9 - which was more similar to what I remember, which meant I knew what I was doing. Maybe some day I'll run it on >=2.6.10, but for now I know it works. I'll start using it as a gateway from this coming weekend. |

It's OK - It'll just be bridging through to the gateway, which will still handle everything, but running three Ethernet interfaces is a hell of a lot easier than setting up an ATM interface, it would seem.
