Mounting an SSD without adapter
Chaps - I've bought an SSD but neglected to purchase a drive bay adapter at the same time.
Assuming there is nothing on offer from the meagre yet overpriced pickings of Maplins and a few local stores, am I safe to simply screw the thing to the base of my drive bay?
It's a removable cage and the rest of my HDDs are simply screwed in at the sides, no fancy plastic slides or anything. It's not ideal but I can sort of loosely fix the SSD in place by sticking a few screws through the air vents at the bottom of the cage. Not worried about it moving around but is there any risk of shorting out?
Re: Mounting an SSD without adapter
That will be fine. So long as it is rigidly mounted so that there is no risk of it moving and damaging the connectors if (for example) you knock the case.
Re: Mounting an SSD without adapter
There are no moving parts and no real heat produced by SSDs.....which means you can pretty much slap them anywhere. I re-built my HTPC 2 days ago and actually taped 2 SSDs together and then taped them into a small gap that looked exploitable!
Re: Mounting an SSD without adapter
You can stick the SSD wherever, I stuck mine to the case with self ahesive hook and loop, link.

It'll be fine. Mine is blu-tacked to the top of my dvd drive and it's been there for 6 months now with no probs
Re: Mounting an SSD without adapter
Great, cheers. I'll leave it where it is then.
Re: Mounting an SSD without adapter
Yeah, there would be no issues - though it is recommended to buy an adapter, especially at the price SSDs are at the moment.
