Now that Samsung have gone, where should I go for my HDDs?

I admit it, I'm a huge Samsung fanboi when it comes to storage. I've got one of their new SSDs here ready to install and all of my HDDs are Samsung. Spinpoint might as well be my middle name.

I know it's a gross oversimplification, but now Samsung aren't in the HDD game any more, what should I be buying now?

I read that Seagate bought them up and are still manufacturing the drives, but are they really still as good? If so, which part numbers should I be looking for if I'm in the market for larger (2TB and over) drives? I don't mind getting 5400 RPM if needs be.

Surely the warranties offered by the manufacturers tell the story? Samsung had a 5 year warranty on my oldest drive and latterly were still giving 3 years cover, but as far as I can see, 1 year is now commonplace?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Samsung sold the division to Seagate so i'd say the Barracuda is the way to go.

    Seagate Barracuda 2 TB ST2000DM001

Re: Now that Samsung have gone, where should I go for my HDDs?

They sold it off April 2011 to concentrate on SSD and RAM.
I don't think that had any OEM contacts so couldn't compete against the other manufacturers on cost.
They own 9.6% of Seagate as part of the deal

There are only three manufactures now...

    Seagate
    Western Digital
    Toshiba

I'm in the same situation, I've been happy for some years buying Samsung drives and now can't decide if I'd rather buy WD or Seagate. Been wary of buying Seagate since they took over Maxtor.

It is getting closer to a monopoly everyday

Re: Now that Samsung have gone, where should I go for my HDDs?

the main downer on seagate is they only offer 1year warranty on the mainstream drives now whereas WD have 2yrs

for me thats a key factor at the minute

Good to see they have confidence in their products

The last time I bought a seagate drive it had the 5 year warranty and that was one of the reasons I bought it.

Yep, RIP Samsung your drives served me well. My last drive was a WD blue.

Read up on them though, the cheaper green drives don't seem to work in some raid controllers, DVRs etc. Black drives are noisey but fast. Blue are a sensible compromise. If you can get the RE4 drives, they have much better MTBF, dual bearings and the dual core controller out of the Black drives but you pay for it.

Re: Now that Samsung have gone, where should I go for my HDDs?

We could all opt for the enterprise level drives for the 'standard' warrany in the hope that prices are driven down in response to the increased demand, or is that not how it works?

Re: Now that Samsung have gone, where should I go for my HDDs?

You're right in that increased demand should eventually lead to increased supply and reduced prices, but in the short term increased demand actually leads to price inflation by outstripping demand (like when the HDD factories got flooded last year).

It's a bit like driving towards a red traffic light faster, hoping that the redshift will make it appear green. You have to drive a whole lot faster!
