I think my SSD is dead

Well I think ny refurbished Crucial C300 128 Gig SSD has died. I've been having issues for weeks with my PC with random lock ups, slow down, my browsers crashing and just some general slow performance in the last few days. Yesterday was the worst when my PC would boot but would take forever to load any applications such as Thunderbird when I wanted to read through my e-mails. I originally thought it was my Windows install but decided seeing as I have master image of my system on one of my external hard drives I dropped in my virtually new and unused WD 500 gig AAKS drive.

Ran in Arcronis with my system image (that program is a life saver ) and my PC has been behaving normally.

Decided to drop the SSD onto my laptop, and soon as I plugged it in and turned it on I would just get a blank screen on my laptop, no nothing I thought I'd bricked my laptop to begin with so then started taking it's RAM out etc, then thought hmm hang on I'll just take the SSD out again, and once it was out the laptop fired up once more.

Going to try my luck with crucial under SGA 79 and see what I can get out of them, I know it was a refurbished drive but given I paid £92 for it not going to let them take the urine with this.

Just wondering if anyone else would disagree with my diagnosis ?

Try connecting the drive to your PC and run CrystalDiskInfo to check the SMART status.

just a thought and i don't know if you tried this or not but

when you installed the OS on the drive was the sata connection set to AHCI or IDE and is the same setting within the laptops BIOS?

just wondering if that was a problem encountered there or not

Re: I think my SSD is dead

Meh well pretty much after 2 weeks I thought I'd update.

SSD is dead, it blacks out both my PC and Laptop. Have had a very heated exchnage of words via e-mail (and phone call) with Crucial, they won't budge on their "Sorry 28 day warranty only jog on mate" policy, trying to make them see the fact that I had statutory rights was about as easy as educating bacon.

Feel a bit sorry for one female operative I spoke to at customer service, I gave her one heck of a hard time, at one point I even got a manager to call me who stated that whilst he knew of the Sale Of Goods Act he felt that the time and use I'd had out of the SSD was both fair and reasonable and then offered to sell me another refurb drive for the same price that I'd paid for my last one. Did try and get him to knock it down to £50 and I said if you do that for me, I'll pay it. Best he could do was £75 so I said no, sorry not at that price.

Was going to go through the hassle of going through small claims, but to be honest paying out £25 to get a small amount back still won't pay for a new drive in retail packaging and though meh nah can't be bothered, so put the sod in the bin, really did think Crucial would have roled over and done something !

Goes to show they aren't Logitech, who will do anything to sort you out !

Re: I think my SSD is dead

Dude, you bought this less than a year ago (assuming this is the offer you you bought it from).

Write a short letter, addressed to the head of customer relations and snail mail it to them via recorded delivery (use Special Delivery if you want to demonstrate that you mean business).
Ask them if they really feel that a life span of less than a year is acceptable for their "quality products". The fact that it was refurbished or had a 30day warranty should be of absolutely no consequence. Refurbished means that the defective item has been returned to an as new condition (functionality, not cosmetics), meaning it should last just as long as a factory new one.

Re: I think my SSD is dead

I forgot to add that I also did write to them, and standard reply was sorry but we feel the time you had was reasonable. If the drive had cost me any more it would have been worth the fight to the bitter end, but in all fairness for the price I paid and if I ask myself honestly I kinda did expect the drive to fail before the year was out.
