    Fast Hard Drive?

Western Digital Caviar Blue 250GB WD2500AAKX Hard Drive - HDD
    250GB WD WD2500AAKX Caviar Blue, SATA 6Gb/s, 7200rpm, 16MB Cache

Is the above a fast hard drive if plugged into a Sata 3 port?

Got 6gb ports on motherboard and need another Hard drive. How good are the above?

    Re: Fast Hard Drive?

It's a standard mechanical hard drive. AFAIK a 7200rpm drive can't even saturate a SATA 2 connection, let alone a SATA 3. The only thing that SATA 3 is useful for is SSDs. As a hard drive I don't think WD Caviar Blues are bad, but I don't think they're particularly better than any other HDD, and they certainly won't benefit from SATA 3 vs SATA 2. SATA HDDs are much of a muchness, tbh, just get the cheapest/GB...

    Re: Fast Hard Drive?

What type of speed are you looking for. If it's read only then SSD's are great. Bear in mind that they're still not ideal. There are still many issues with SSD's. For example when the drive fills up performance can take a hit. Also they can be really slow writing small files.

If you want a fast hard drive then WD raptor's have for a long while held the speed sweepstake but then again they've been expensive. In any case two bog standard hard drives in striped raid setup will be faster than raptors.

Also what do you want to use the drives for? To be honest since Sata II drives came out I don't think there's much difference to the user - they're all fast enough for the home user.
