Samsung 830 128GB – which version to get?

    Hi Everyone,

I’m almost definitely ordering the Samsung 830 128 GB. I’m wanting to fit it into a desktop case. BUT there are several different versions of this. I don’t think I need the Norton ghost or anything. I just want to know if it will fit in my case in 2.5 inch bay. I mean, does it come with the right screws etc?

The case I’m likely to get is the Silverstone SG05 or if it comes out early enough, the Cooler Master Advanced Elite 120.

Naturally i want the cheapest option that will simply just screw in and connect up.

    Anyone help?

The desktop kit comes with a sata cable/mounting, the others don't. If you didn't get a sata cable with your motherboard (they often come with one or more), then get the desktop kit. Mounting SSDs isn't hugely important, they can pretty much live anywhere.

Edit: If you decide to get the 256GB version, buy the basic/notebook kit instead (whichever you can find cheapest) and then buy a separate sata cable (<£2). I'm not sure why the desktop kit has such a premium for the 256GB 830...

if you can afford it I would go for the 256GB version as it offers faster random and sequential write speeds (though random read/write speeds are far more important, especially 4K speeds).

the 256 version sells for £143 on Scan: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/256gb...write-400mb-s- though it's not in stock until 25 July. No idea why the notebook kit is cheaper than the rest, even the basic pack with nothing extra bundled with it...

The simplified explanation is that the 128GB has 2x 64GB memory modules whereas the 256GB has 4x 64GB memory modules so it can theoretically read and write 2x more data in parallel

If you want a brilliant guide read through http://thessdreview.com/ssd-guides/b...cturers-bluff/ and the rest of the guides

And as Vancha said the SSD can live anywhere since it has no moving parts so it's quite safe. I just mounted mine to the optical drive bay with 2 screws (just the standard screws that came with the case worked fine) since I had no 2.5" mounts. Got the 256GB version and it's been plain sailing since then

Both those cases support 2.5" drives so get whichever SSD kit is cheapest.

At the time the 256gb 830 notebook kit was cheapest for me at £140, my case only supports 3.5" drives screwed in from the bottom so sourced an Intel SSD mounting kit for a couple of quid from ebay which has 3.5" screwholes at the bottom, I don't believe in bodge mounting.

Thanks a lot guys! Unbelievable response!

I am very aware of the fact that 256 is better as it doubles the channels again, but can't afford it. I am planning to get a second 2.5 inch drive with at least 500GB.

So from what i read here, get the cheapest one as it doesn't matter. They take the standard SATA cables?

If that is so, then i can feel at ease.

Indeed they are all the same physical drive just the accessories kits that are different.

I'm sure i can find a SATA cable from somewhere. As long as they don't do some sort of mini Sata cable. then everything looks fine and dandy.

Careful with the Silverstone case. The holes for the screws (on mine at least) didn't quite line up so I have 3 screws holding the drive.
