    Just been given an SSD

I have just been given a 30Gb OCZ Vertex SSD

I have updated it's firmware to 1.7 since I always check for new firmware whenever I get new hardware.

SSD Health utility shows it at 99% health so still lots of life left in it.

Now I really know nothing about these drives, I already have 2 Tb of storage in my machine so of what real use is a 30Gb SSD?

    a bit small for either.

My boot drive is 500 Gb and already has over 230 Gb on it

I was thingking of sticking it in an eSata caddy and using as an external drive but I'm not sure how well that would work or again if 30Gb is really worth it.

Re: Just been given an SSD

You could just reinstall your OS and put that on it.
Then have the 500gb drive for your programs etc, will mean you'll have a slightly snappier feel overall to your pc.

If you already have 500Gb of SSD - it's not worth anything to you, but may be useful to others on Hexus.

Re: Just been given an SSD

    my 500Gb is not SSD

this little 30Gb is the first SSD I have ever had.

I may sell it on but not sure how well that would work on here since the majority are in the UK and I am in The Netherlands so postage would kill any value.

As far as OS on this drive and games and such on another, every time I have tried that I have run into no end of problems. Yes I got around them eventualy but one thing I hate doing is messing around to get things to work

Re: Just been given an SSD

    Really ?
I never had any issues transferring from HDD to SSD. I used a clean install of windows and the windows backup utility. Sure it's a long process like any other re-install, but it's up to you as to whether it would be worth it.
Personally - I'd pass it on to someone who needs it. I doubt that postage is that much actually. Certainly only a few Euros.

Re: Just been given an SSD

There should be no issue, once you've reinstalled, you just install your programs onto your 500gb HDD, it's done all the time? Not sure what issues you had.

    I'll expand upon that.
Any games that contain a lot of data that needs to be loaded and processed quickly, you should put on that HDD. I'd say Skyrim has a lot of content that may benefit from a SSD due to the fact it can be loaded more quickly and thus will increase framerate and reduce lag.

Have a look at FancyCache which is free and can use your SSD to cache your HDD:

Use it to build a very quiet & small server (eg email).

Update an old laptop to make it feel snappier.

Re: Just been given an SSD

Even though you could shoehorn Win7 onto it, the amount of bumph installed by apps and updates would probably max it in no time.

I guess you could use things like folder redirection to move your profile and also create your swapfile on a HDD......but those are 2 of the things that benefit the most from SSD....

30GB would be a bit small for normal usage. Try make it SSD cache.

As above, use it as a cache drive, if it makes no difference, then maybe use it for your main game or all your programs etc.
