Re: Do I need to do a reinstall with a new SSD?

I assume it's the same thread mentioned here: http://forums.hexus.net/current-barg...ml#post2669525

There are, AFAIK, a number of chipsets that have partial AHCI implementations (I know nvidia 680i in my P5N32-SLI is one) so they don't natively support AHCI but you can get AHCI features from them with certain drivers (caused me no end of hassle when trying to update the firmware on my HyperX 3K!). So basically if you're using one of those motherboards you don't get the full benefit of the SSDs features. The SSD should still work though, and will still be a lot quicker for random access than any HDD.

The thing is, with modern SSDs, AHCI isn't a massive issue. Ideally you should have it yes, but most drives have good internal GC.

It certainly won't stop it from working though!

Re: Do I need to do a reinstall with a new SSD?

Indeed. I've got my fingers crossed for the Verbatim I grabbed for my mates, don't know what the garbage collection is like on that. I've not heard anything bad yet though, so I'm assuming it's running OK Anyone got any tips on tweaking Win XP for SSDs? Obviously disable defrag... anything else?

Oh, and apologies to the OP for the threadjack

Re: Do I need to do a reinstall with a new SSD?

Honestly? Don't have XP on a SSD

XP won't even align it properly, never mind not having TRIM. Make sure you make / align the partition outside of XP or you'll utterly kill the drives performance.

What controller does it have? I looked at the drive but could hardly find anything out about it, which instantly made me weary.

Re: Do I need to do a reinstall with a new SSD?

Drive's a Phison controller, it's basically hardware identical to the Crucial V4. The original plan was to upgrade the lappy to Win 7 at the same time, but it's got an (iirc) SiI3512 sata controller and Win 7 *really* doesn't like it. I basically spent about 90 minutes trying to get updates/drivers onto it to make it stable and it BSOD about 6 times, so in the end I just gave up and cloned the old XP drive onto it using Acronis True HD (or whatever it was that came with my HyperX 3K).

It seemed to be running pretty well when I fired it up to test it - nice and responsive. Presumably that's because the Acronis software handles partition management when you do the disk clone. The interesting thing will be how long it keeps running well...

Yeah, it's the same link, here it is again as I posted this on the wrong thread this morning, must have been tired at that time!

Anyway the issue seems to be specifically with Asus P5 mobos due to Asus not injecting Intel OROM updates so the AHCI mode doesn't work correctly with the SSDs, the guy in that thread was determined to make his SSD work in AHCI mode but for some reason not too determined to use the BIOS update fix suggested on many occasions, even by those who had successfully tried it themselves.

The synapse is a cache drive, this is a boot drive.

Yep, it seems to be a specific issue with ASUS and the P5 boards. This isn't the same as "Older rigs such as those running the P5 chipsets won't work with SSDs without some BIOS mods." though.

Not trying to nitpick, but there is one heck of a difference between an entire chipset range not working correctly, and a manufacturer doing a shoddy job with BIOS updates (ASUS have always lacked there though)

Yeah, the difference is clear, my bad. I posted with reference to what I had read in that post and the details had become fuzzy over time, had you not asked for more info I wouldn't have looked it up and gone on believing that there was an issue with all P5 mobos and SSDs.

Copy the data (not the partition) from your old drive to the new one.
Can you just drag and drop in Windows 7 to do this? I remember back in the days of 2000/XP it wouldn't copy every single file over and had to use diskcopy or xcopy or something.
About to do the same with my M4.

EDIT: After a bit of reading, looks like it's the Win 7 DVD and Robocopy for me.

Edit 2: My current system is a dual boot Windows7 x64/Vista x86. I only want to copy the first partition over to the SSD. Would anyone have the correct command for that?

Re: Do I need to do a reinstall with a new SSD?

After lots of hair pulling, failed attempts and the usual swearing that comes when trying to do things with a computer, I used this line to copy all the required data across:

    Robocopy e:\ h:\ /e /copyall /dcopy:t /r:0 /xj /b

(e:\ and h:\ being the 2 drives whilst in the Vista desktop. Naturally they will differ from system to system.)
