    64 or 128gb ssd?

What should i get for my upcoming build, 64gb is £55, 128gb is £77, ill be putting windows, maybe a couple programs and possible 1 or two games, but not much. Probably wont use most of the space, but is there a speed difference and also should i just get the 128gb due to the low price?

Where are you getting these prices? You can get a decent 120gb for around £60.

No speed difference between capacity, only between quality/models of devices.

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

Im looking at the crucial m4 (128gb is £77) and the samsung 830 series (£80 for 128, but £55 for 64gb), these are the most reccomended ssds from a few people i have asked in terms of reliability and speed.

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

For that price differential definitely go for the larger drive.
I got my first SSD about 2 years ago, a 60Gb one was all I could afford then. I squeezed on Win 7 and a range of progs but that left little space for data or temp folders.
I recently upgraded to a 256Gb Samsung 830 and moved the 60Gb drive to HTPC duties where it only has to hold Win and XBMC as all the data is on a NAS drive. For a main PC build you defo need more than 60-odd Gb in my opinion.

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

Hard question to answer because, primarily, it depends on how much £22 difference means to you, and only you know.

The larger drive will be a bit faster, because you can get more on it, be it temp folders, important data or major apps, like Office. But the bulk of the speed increase will come from using the smaller drive and putting Windows, and whatever else you can fit, on it.

So, it's a relatively small performance gain, but then, it's a relatively small price increment.

If that extra £22 means you'll struggle to pay the gas bill, I'd suggest the smaller drive (or not doing it at all). If it makes no real difference at all, then go for the bigger one. You'll get more on, get a bit of extra speed, and have more breathing room.

Trouble is, once you settle on the 128GB, you then start looking at the deal prices on a 256GB that come up from time to time. Where do you draw the line?

    I run a 64GB for win and a 128GB for games.

The 64GB has 30GB left once win7 is installed. Not to shabby.

Depending on your budget. Get the 128GB but 64GB would do for a system drive.

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

I'm going to be different and suggest Intel Smart Response which uses the SSD as a cache drive, essentially copying the most frequently used data from a standard HDD to the SSD and then loading it from there, this means that you will nearly always see an improvements in read speeds even if you have a 2tb HDD and a 64gb SSD, Bootup times will always be faster as the boot files will be in the most frequently access files if you shut down regularly. If you don't have an Intel chipset that supports Smart Response you can always look to an SSD with the Dataplex software like an OCZ Synapse drive and I think Crucial make a drive that has this as well.

I've been using my Synapse drive since January, I get start up time of less than 30 seconds from a cold start and find that start up times in games are really quick and smooth and I don't have to worry about managing the space on my drive as it is done automatically.

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

I'd personally go for a 120, you will soon find that 64GB just isn't enough.

Amazon are currently doing the Agility 3 120GB for £65

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

If you can afford the extra, i'd definitely say it's worth paying the extra and going for a 120/128gb drive. 64gb might seem adequate now but with the size of some installs nowadays, it could take you only a few new programs/games you like before it starts running out of space. Crucial M4 and Samsung 830 are both good calls.

Snap, same here, got a 64gb m4 as my boot and program drive including Photoshop elements and just under 4gb with in game play replay which is supposed to get deleted once the game has stopped & only used 51%. got my Kingston 128 as my gaming drive, but with just a few games that's nearly 50% full. Definitely get the 120+ if you plan to put a few games on there.

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

I'd go for 128GB personally if you want to put game son there, you don't get left with all that much after the OS install on 64GB.

About 25-30GB left, and if you play WoW and decide to put that on there for example. That's practically all your space gone

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

I would go for a 128 Gb, because it is cheaper per Gb, faster and the price difference is only 20 to 25£. Although you probably won't notice that it's faster, except when benching.
I have a 30Gb Agility as boot drive and it is enough for a Win 7 Ultimate and some temp folders.

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

I would go for the 128gb which I am going for myself in the near future the price difference is pretty small but you can fit a few more games which you play a lot on there. 830 is the one I am leaning to at the moment.

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

Definitely go for 128gb. I have several and my original 60GB just seems too small as an OS drive, especially if you want to put a game or two on it. It fills up a lot faster than you think.

Even with my 120GB drive, I moved my documents/pics folders to another larger drive to save space.

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

Go with the 128GB size. 64GB are too small for a windows os...that can grow up later...! My C drive is at 194GB....if I remove some vbox virtual machines my win7 would fit perfectly in a 128GB SSD..with many programs installed!

    Re: 64 or 128gb ssd?

For a boot drive, a 60Gb is enough. But the difference in price is too low between 60 and 128 to not go for a 128Gb.
