Need help on a good gaming ssd

I'd say Crucial M4 or Sandisk Extreme.

But you mentioned "another SSD". SSDs do pretty much nothing for gaming. It'll load up games quick but it won't give you more "fps". Buying an SSD purely for gaming is a bit of a waste of money in my opinion.

It's mainly up to the RAM to get the files quickly to be processed.

i been told for loading games fast i should look at the read speed and the Kingston is 555 so wouldn't that be the best one to buy? not trying to be rude i have no knowledge of this kinda of stuff iam going by what people have been telling me

They seem to hit their rated read/write speed in reviews whereas the OCZ Agility for example (I looked at this before) hit half its rated speed.

Here M4 is top of the list. Bear in mind the OCZ for example is worse than the Vertex.

Just because an SSD is "rated" for read/write doesn't mean it hits that. Depends on the controller. Benchmarks usually show if the SSD is pulling its weight.

I have to be honest, if this is purely for gaming you may as well buy the cheapest 128GB SSD you can find. Any SSD over a HDD will be faster. SSDs are pure performance with file transferring. In gaming an SSD will do the same amount of work a HDD will do. Why? Because RAM does most of the work, the rest is done mainly on the processor.

An SSD/HDD is only there to hand out the files needed for the maps, AI, pointers etc to the RAM. After that its up to the RAM to quickly transfer it to the processor.

HDD/SSD is the parcel transfer (give the parcel to the post depot), RAM is the post office (sorting out the parcels) and the processor is the postal van (speedy delivery) (sorry the cheesy explanation!)

EDIT: It's your money at the end of the day and you may not be wowed by in-game performance, because you may get about 1-2 higher frame rates. However general programs will seem zippy!

Would the M4 be recommended for an OS SSD then? I'm currently looking into SSD's also and most people seem to recommend the M4. What size would you recommend for an OS drive?

About 128GB for your main files and programs I would say. 64GB is cutting it, SSDs do show slowness when near full.

Besides that, a single Windows installation uses up quite a bit too, around 20GB?

Okay, think I know what I will do. Get a Samsung 830 or Crucial M4. Around 128gb, stick windows on it and my programs. Shove my steam folder onto my standard HDD and see how it goes from there Since most people have been saying it wont do much to gaming. Which I fully understand. Thanks!

To be fair any SSD will do for a boot drive. The lowest SSDs will feel quick compared to a HDD

I believe it's how fast you write files ONTO the drive as opposed to read which is how fast you read files FROM the drive
