RAID 5 adding more drives question

Hi all,

I've currently got a HighPoint RR RAID5 setup made from 4 2TB drives. I'm moving this to another of their cards as I need more drives.

My question is, do I have to add more 2TB drives only or can I add 3TB drives?

You can add 3TB drives but remember that it will only use 2TB of each drive and the drive geometries will be different, potentially affecting performance.

Cool, that's what I wasn't sure off, I shall just stick to 2TB then I'm not bothered about perf, they're only ever streaming one HD stream at once and if I'm copying it just takes as long as it takes.

buy 3tb if you can afford it then replace others one by one and when they are all 3tb up the size of the array to take advantage.

This would be an ideal situation but I need the storage now, which would mean buying a 3TB drive and not being able to expand the array until I'd also replaced the existing 4 x 2TB discs :/
