Is 128gb SSD enough for OS and programs?

I tried a 128gb, and while I don't have an insane amount of games etc, I found that with all my programs, I didn't have much room, and had to uninstall games to install others etc.
Now got a 256 with about 60gb spare

I'd go for a 256GB one if you want to have more than just a few games on there.

Is it not still a good idea regardless of TRIM to keep about 20GB or 15% free for SSD, so 128 should be thought of as roughly 110 of useable space. I think 128GB is a little bit of a tight squeeze if it is the sole hard drive and gaming is required.
I'm about to go for some SSD's but it is planned as OS only so 128GB will be plentiful, I would go for 60GB but the read and write speeds drop quite a bit, and a bit of future proofing is always worth it.

I'd get the extra space. You're not going to notice a speed increase, if that's your reasoning for picking the Pro.

If you really can't think of what you're going to use the extra 128GB for (I like having a bit of headroom, and there are always things you can put on an SSD later) then you might as well get the 128GB standard and spend your cash elsewhere.

There is no "one size fits all" answer to this issue. It depends entirely on what people do with their machines, how often they do it, and the available funding.

But to the OP, consider this. SSD prices appear to be continuing to drop, so there's nothing to stop you starting with a 128GB SSD and that 2TB HD now, and adding another 128GB (or larger, for that matter) in months or a year, if need be. You could then install extra apps on that new drive, and even transfer some existing ones, if you need to.


Personally, I like to structure an installation using the OS. and a minimialist core set of essential apps on one logical drive, the C drive. I then image that, and can restore from the image quickly. Core apps include firewall, AV, etc.

Other main apps, like Photoshop, Office apps, etc, go on a D partition. data goes on yet another, games on another, and "archive" material, be it photos, music, stored PDF's and reference data, etc, on yet another.

I've used that layout for many years, and it lends itself to any of those partitions being replaced by a physical drive, including in recent times, an SSD.

Using that logic, you'd get away with a 60GB boot SSD, so you'd certainly get away with a 128GB one. And then maybe add a 128 for the D drive, for major apps.

There is, as the saying goes, more than one way to skin a cat, so a lot depends on how you want to do things, and on the value to you of the difference in cost. If a couple of hundred quid difference means as much to you as it would to Bill Gates or HM the Queen, get a couple of 240GB drives and be done with it. If you're struggling to covsr the cost, be a little more creative and think about a structure like the above to give you more versatility.

120GB was NOT enough for my wife's PC. We had to upgrade to 240G within about a year.

Conversely, a 32GB is currently doing the trick on my 2nd PC, although the spindle disk takes care of the vast majority of the storage.
