    OCZ Refurb Drives

Looking for opinions for very small and cheap SSD to act as the OS drive for my new server build. Novatech have some OCZ refurb drives. I seem to recall these were, erm, dodgy when new, any opinions now with all firmware up to date. Don't need more storage so didn't want to spend too much, and ebay prices for old M4s are still high.

    Re: OCZ Refurb Drives

I wouldn't trust a server build with a refurb for the OS drive.

Yes - they are still terrible.

    They're cheap for a reason.

    Re: OCZ Refurb Drives

I have an OCZ drive in the wife's laptop. That is because it never has any important data on it, so performance and cost mattered more than the risk of losing all the data on it.

The latest OCZ drives sound OK, but their reputation is rather in tatters now.

    Re: OCZ Refurb Drives

To be fair my OCZ drive is still going strong, it was a Corsair Force GT drive (same chipset) that gave me trouble.

    Re: OCZ Refurb Drives

After my experience with a Vertex 2E I wouldn't touch a new OCZ drive let alone a refurb. I had a 120Gb 2E die on me just after the 1 year mark had passed. Sent it off to Holland for RMA and got a brand new one back. In the meantime i had upgraded to my Sandisk drive. I sold the Vertex 2E on another forum and the buyer got back to me 2 weeks later to tell me that had just died. Helped him with the RMA and he got a brand new one back again. That died 4 weeks later. Abysmal!!

There is also the fact that OCZ are in serious difficulties and they may go under very soon. If they do, that's the warranty gone.

    Re: OCZ Refurb Drives

If you can find something that is ridiculously good value for money (120GB drive for 50 quid) then I would have a go - especially through Scan as even if OCZ go then I'm pretty sure Scan would replace it/refund you.

I've NEVER had any problems with OCZ since Vertex 4. They had refurb revo drives dirt cheap a while ago but I don't have any PCI slots available so I couldn't get it

    Re: OCZ Refurb Drives

I'm thinking about picking one up at some point, one of my friends has had a refurb vertex 4 256gb for a while now and he's really impressed - seems like a great way to get into the higher capacities on a budget

    Re: OCZ Refurb Drives

Thanks all, decided to give them a miss for now and rebuilt the HTPC instead while I decide. In the US this week so will see if I can pick up a bargain there, if not black friday deals on amazon might just pop up a treat of an upgrade for the desktop, with the M4 in that dropping down to the server.

I certainly agree that for higher capacity drives there are plenty of others at a good price and wouldn't look at the refurbs

    Re: OCZ Refurb Drives

I've had a Vertex 2 60GB bought when they were first released. Running in a server with constant IO 24/7 for the last 3 years. No problems.

I still wouldn't buy another one though due to the horror stories.

    Re: OCZ Refurb Drives

Scan have the fast 512GB Vector SSDs on offer at the moment. I bought two and have them running in my desktop and another in the laptop. The desktop one gets used pretty massively, no issues so far (but it's only been a month).
Scan do offer a 6 month warranty should anything go wrong.
