    Seagate or Western Digital?

Which one should I go For storage or does it really matter?
The ratings I've seen for the two are quite high.

    Re: Seagate or Western Digital?

If you had asked me about 3 or 4 years ago I would have said Seagate, but 7 out of 8 of my Seagate drives have failed over the last 3 or 4 years and all within 2 to 3 months of their 1 yr warranty expiring, the only exception was replaced under warranty but the replacement drive failed 14 months after I got it, so I would say WD.

Which drives in particular are you looking at? And what is/are the drive/s going to be used for?

    Re: Seagate or Western Digital?

I would say you could reconsider Toshiba drives as well.

But I don't have a preferred personally, I go after the warranty on drives and back up regularly. Drives failed for me all the times and with no reference to brand. I have still two 40GB Maxtor drives humming away in a dual PIII server

Buy based on the warranty/price and back up regularly. Best suggestion I could give.

As someone who looks after an array of NASes and SANs (if you pardon the pun!) I'd go WD....pulling way too many Seagates for RMA or the bin.

Is it me, or Toshiba and Hitachi drives don't receive much love around here. Or they are not taken seriously On the other hand, only HDDs so far I had to sent back to the retailer/manufacturer were all Seagates. Didn't had many desktop Western Digital(s) drives (on the other hand most of the laptop drives I handle are either WD or Seagate). Had/got a few Samsung(s) still.

    Re: Seagate or Western Digital?

The only drives I've had fail on me recently have been WD, although i suspect that might have been damage in transit as they weren't part icyularly well packages (they were NOT from Scan) Samsung were my drive of choice, although their manufacturing facility has been bought by Seagate. Will that make a difference to the quality? Hard to tell. I am using a mix of Hitachi, Seagate and WD drives in various systems at the moment. Personally, I don't see much to chose between them as consumer drives, although my gut instinct is that Hitachi seem to be built up to a spec, rather than down to a price. Price tends to drive the consumer market, but to get the lowest price, something has to go,and that may be QC.

However, the 4TB Hitachi drives sen very good units, I've had a couple running almost 24x7 for nearly a year (6,900 hrs) in a server without problems, and another pair in the same server running for over nine months (5,200 hrs) and a smaller seagate running for 5,280 hours. Although those aren't particularly high figures, it is pretty much continuous operation (the server uptime is currently 196 days)

Of course, from a practical matter, all hard drives WILL fail at some point, and while stats might give a mean time between failures, stats apply to populations, not individual items and any disk can fail at any time - regardless of price/quality. Which is why backups are so important.

Warranties might be a guide - a manufacturer offering a long warranty might have more confidence in the drive. One thing about warranties though - you will probably have to return the drive, and if that contains sensitive personal information, you might be reluctant to send that back where it is out of your control.

Whilst I work for a completely different part of Hitachi, having seen the Hitachi way in general I can easily believe it.

    WD out of those two.

I wouldn't rule out Hitachi Deskstar NAS drives either.

    Re: Seagate or Western Digital?

WD digital are currently cheaper at £40 for a TB. In my personal opinion WD are more reliable but that is after I had one 500gb seagate drive fail on me.

    Re: Seagate or Western Digital?

I work in a school and we build all our own computers from components.

We have only ever bought WD over the last 5+ years. (Before then we tried a mixture of many types)

To other makes they just seem overall more reliable.

I also only buy WD for my home computers (based on how reliable they have been at work)
