Question Looking for Online Storage or Local Backup for several 4TB Hard Drives

I have several 4TB internal hard drives, I go through an extra 12TB worth of hard drives every year. I collect TV recordings.
I also have several eSATA hard drives.

I'm looking for a cheap and reliable online storage company. I tried CrashPlan however their software sucks. The main problem is that I have a 2MB/s upload speed but it was only uploading at 300 Kbps. Their software also gives script errors and in their documentation it says it can use up to 80% of your CPU. Why the heck would it need to do that, it's just uploading files not bloody encoding them!

CrashPlan and similar companies state that they genuinely offer unlimited storage subject to fair use) so that's not a problem.

Ideally the company could support local backup where I can send a hard drive to them for them to backup and they send it back but it doesn't matter if they don't support that. I'm in the UK by the way.

Another concern of mine is what happens if a previously backed up drive changes it's drive letter as sometimes Windows changes the drive letters when you disconnect and reconnect drives. Will the system recognize it as a new drive to be backed up or will it recognize that it's already been backed up. Or does it just remember the volume label?

Can anyone recommend any good companies?

I think Spideroak just announced an unlimited package, but they're all about the encryption so will likely need your CPU to do some heavy lifting.

Don't know of any others beyond Crashplan, but I'm sure there will be.

upload to usenet as an encrypted password protected set of files with a lot of par files. based on current retention limits it should stay up for at least 4 years from now. then of course you may need to reupload again. but at 2mb upload speed it will take ages to upload everything you have even if you can upload at full speed which usenet should let you do. i wouldn't be surprised if your ISP stops you for breaking some FUP. if you want to upload i'd suggest changing ISP to one of the smaller ones that lets you pick the upload/download ratio to get faster uploads. however with such slow speeds currently and uploads in general taking a while, you would be better off just using local storage on a NAS with raid or just buy 2 storage discs at a time so you have a backup copy for each disc

however with the volume you are obtaining you aren't likely to have time to rewatch most of it so the whole excersize may be futile

It's perfectly legal to record TV shows to keep as files such as there was no law against keeping a show you recorded off TV onto VHS. I'm not here to debate that, I don't want to share the files, I want to backup my files so I'm not interested in usenet, I'm looking for a proper online backup company.

Re: Looking for Online Storage or Local Backup for several 4TB Hard Drives

It's only legal to timeshift TV programmes. That is - in order to watch them once.

Strictly speaking, you should delete any recordings as soon as you watch them, and even more strictly speaking you can't record a programme you're watching at the time.

But back to your question. Storage doesn't become magically free just because it's in the cloud. 12 TB of storage is a lot of storage and is going to seriously cost you. Do you have somewhere offsite where you could host your own NAS farm? You should be able to get a 12TB NAS for around £1k if you don't need redundancy.

I'm not interested in a NAS. A never said storage became magically free. I said they genuinely offer unlimited storage subject to fair use. I've done my research on that, so that's not an issue.

I'm just looking for a good cheap online storage company that has a good client that allows me to upload at full speed.

I don't think unique was suggesting they were shared - thats why you would encrypt them - so no-one else could open them. It was only suggested as a storage location - although, as he pointed out, it would be relatively slow - although probably not much slower than any other cloud storage facility).

I know the intention is only for storage, but intention doesn't count for much legally - if you're uploading copyright content that other people can download then you are effectively distributing copyright content. Encrypting the files doesn't change that as far as I know - the content is still there, which what you are copying and distributing.

Jesus Christ guys, I didn't come for a debate! I just wanted to know if you know of any online storage companies! I haven't heard any mentioned so I assume you don't. The online storage account is used to backup my video collection NOT file sharing and Crashplan for example doesn't even have that ability. Don't care about encryption, I just want to backup my stuff.

    Thanks anyway.

Well, that is debatable - you were allowed to record for timeshiftimg purposes and keep the recordings for a reasonable period of time - which was originally defined as no more than 28 days. The time period has not (AFAIK - and I am not a lawyer) been tested in the courts.

If the file is encrypted, and the uploader is the only person with the encryption/decryption key, then all anyone else could download would be a pseudo-random series of bits.

We know - we're debating whether a particular source of 'backup' is available to you or not. That's how we learn from each other so that when someone asks 'do you know of any x?' we can answer more accurately.

Re: Looking for Online Storage or Local Backup for several 4TB Hard Drives

TBH I expect the 'several 4TB hard drives' may breach the FUP of some 'unlimited' providers.

Also, do you have a 2MByte/s or 2Mbit/s upload speed? Because 300kByte/s transfer speed sounds about right for a 2Mbit/s upload speed.

At 2Mbit/s, you're looking at roughly 180 days *per drive*, provided upload speed doesn't dip. And your ISP would probably have something to say about that too TBH.

If you want to back up a ton of WORM data, either buying a load more HDDs, or perhaps even a tape drive system if you can find one cheap, would probably be a lot more realistic.
