New SSD needed for new build?

    Morning all.

    Currently I have a 60GB OCZ Vertex 2 (as my OS drive) in my current build - a rather long-in-the-tooth self-build mainly consisting of an Asus P5Kc mobo & a Q6600 G0.

I've just started the process of dragging my rig into the steam age by way of purchasing an i5 4670K and an Asus P8Z77-V LX2 mobo but I'm concerned that maybe the Vertex 2 - although fast enough for the old girl - will be a bit slow for the new bird?

    Thoughts?

You will need to do a bit more research on your component choice. The quoted CPU is Socket 1150 while the motherboard is Socket 1155.

If you stick with that processor, then you should probably aim at a Z97-based board. That assumes you intend overclocking the processor.

If not, then an H97 board and a CPU without the "k" on the end will save you a few pounds.

Although I don't have an OCZ Vertex to comment on, I would suggest that the limitations of the other component parts of the motherboard will render the difference between that SSD and a newer one pretty irrelevant.

Then again, if you're keen and have deep pockets, you could try seeking out an M.2 SSD.

Your choice to make based on whether you want to spend the money.

As liammcd says, check your mobo & cpu choice - they're not compatible!

In real world usage you're unlikely to notice the difference between the Vertex 2 and a newer "faster" SSD as it's very rare that an SSD is the bottleneck in any process. Sure, the benchmarks look impressive, but it won't make you type faster, it won't make your game run smoother, it won't make pages download over your broadband connection faster - it'll just work.

One thing to consider though, since you're looking at high end Intel parts, is whether you want to stick to having a small OS drive or if you want to use the 60GB SSD as a cache for Intel's Smart Response Technology.

    Brain-fart & typo caused by simultaneously reading a review on the 4670k - it's a 3570k I have

Then I would ask how much you have for an SSD set aside...? Because below £50 you can get a nice Crucial M500 120GB (purchased 2 days ago one for £45) which should be enough for an OS plus a moderate number of programs. For under £80 there is double the size.

For value SSDs I would suggest Crucial M500 or Kingston V300. Nough said. But as Jim said, on your new Mobo you could use the old SSD as cache (not sure how well it would work).

840 evo 120gb. They are currently at an all time low of £54 on amazon and best value for money. A m500 or m100 would be cheaper but will not have comparable performance to a 840.
