    Which SSD to buy?

    Hello everyone,

There are a few SSD that I want to buy, but I'm still confused to choose which one will be my best buy for my money.

    1. Plextor M6 PRO Xtreme 512 GB
    2. Sandisk Extreme PRO 480 GB
    3. ...(your input, I will appreciate it)

To be honest, I want to get the Samsung 850 PRO 1 TB, but the price are ridiculous, so I didn't add it on my list. The 512 GB model unfortunately still don't available on my country...

First, Plextor M6 PRO is more cheaper than Extreme Pro on my country, but Sandisk have a longer warranty than plextor,

The main thing is, I wasn't able to find a reliable review for the Plextor SSD...(for 512 GB / 1 TB capacities)...I only found a 256 GB review, so got a little bit confused about this...

When at the same time, there are a few review say that the Samsung (PRO version) is good for most users, but Unfortunately I can't justify the price...for 512 GB and 1 TB models especially.

My question is, Does Plextor M6 PRO is a good SSD? Does those SSD is use MLC instead of TLC?

And Last, Does SSD performance will become slower or inconsistent when the capacities are full?

    Thanks,

    Re: Which SSD to buy?

Unless you plan to use the SSD for commercial or enterprise purposes, the "pro" version will be just wasted money (unless the "pro" is cheaper that the mainstream model).

What use do you envision for the SSD? (OS plus applications, games or photo & video editing)?

Also what is your machine configuration to which you plan to attach the SSD?

I would say for everyday use MLC or TLC SSDs are just fine, try to stay away from SandForce based models and don't go for the cheapest or the most expensive models either. The middle class offers the most bang for your buck so just go for it.

Crucial MX100, Crucial MX500, Crucial MX550, SanDisk Ultra Plus or SanDisk Ultra II are models I have experience with and they were all fantastic (not to mention the incredible value under the right conditions).

    Answer...

Lurk on hotukdeals for a few days and then buy the one that turns up on offer and gets some heat.

I doubt HUKD is going to be helpful when they live in Indonesia

I've been looking at buying an ITX motherboard with an mSata slot so I'm considering an mSata SSD instead of a standard SSD. Kingston seem to do some decent cheap ones and from the reviews I've read they look to be quicker than SanDisk etc. Anyone else had any experience with mSata SSD's?

Personally for a standard SSD i've always gone with Crucial or OCZ but I hear that the Samsungs are well made and reliable too.

...and SSD performance shouldn't be detrimentally affected by reaching close to capacity. Certainly a lot less so than with a spinning HDD as we all know that seek times get ridiculous once a hard disk gets full and has files fragmented all over the disk. No such issue with SSD's and no need to defrag every week. (hurray)

    Re: Which SSD to buy?

mSATA SSDs are literally the same as the 2.5" ones (especially SanDisk's, the PCB inside the 2.5" case is near enough a mSATA SSD).

Kingston has a disputable reputation right now, think twice before purchase I say.

The full capacity does affected SSDs more that HDDs in terms of speed I would say but modern models, clever technologies and over-provisioning does a good job to reduce the speed penalties to minimum.

    Re: Which SSD to buy?

Thanks Bonebreaker. I'll do a bit more research before I settle on a model. I've heard in the past that Kingston have had reliability issues so you're probably right and I might be better off paying a bit more and getting a Crucial / Samsung etc.

    Re: Which SSD to buy?

SanDisk and Crucial are more of value SSDs, Samsung tends to be more of a premium brand over here. Not sure about the prices in Indonesia.

    Re: Which SSD to buy?

You can't go wrong with Samsung or a Crucial drive. I have SSD's from both manufacturers and they perform really well. Price wise the Crucial MX100 series is probably your best bet. As mentioned above, hang about on Hotukdeals and one is bound to come up at some point.

    Re: Which SSD to buy?

I'd recommend a Samsung SSD. I've got a 120gb Samsung 840 series and it works like a charm.
